SEATTLE, Wash. -- Bed bugs are eating their way into more and more apartment buildings these days, including one in downtown Seattle where tenants say they are being forced to fend for themselves.

Wally Wise walks into his home that has become a battlefield.  The enemy: bed bugs.

"The bugs were crawling along there and up here to get at me," he said.

Wally fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. That, he said, was nothing compared to the battle of the bugs.

"Hell. Literally hell, because you didn't know where they were coming from and you didn't know what would kill them," he said.

About 300 other tenants share the same apartment building in downtown Seattle, which they now also share with bed bugs. And Wally isn't just fighting bed bugs...he's fighting management.

"They've done nothing," he said. "Either in compensating in some way or making our life a little more bearable."

Wally is not alone. Another tenant, along with her attorney, delivered a letter to management Tuesday saying they had failed in their obligation to provide a clean place to live.

KING 5 News tried talking to management too. Their response - no comment.

Wally Wise hopes the bugs are gone for good but he also does not want to wait to find out.

"I'm worn out being uncomfortable. The last two days I've just been dragging myself around.  I'm 87 and this is not the way to live," he said.

Tenants say management not only ignored their complaints but also failed to notify other tenants of the bed bug problem.

Did you know that bed bugs LOVE goose and duck down, and HATE mulberry silk? Bamboo and mulberry silk are the only fibers that are naturally pest-resistant. Mulberry silk is also naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial and mold and mildew repellent. Check out this video of bed bugs preferring down over mulberry silk: bit.ly/bedbugshatesilk

They latch onto you while sleeping and inject you with a numbing liquid and then suck your blood for 30 min to an hour and you can't even feel them there. They particularly like the calf area. Left me bubbles the size of golf balls. GROSS!! and painful. They carry tons of bacteria and diseases. Way worse than roaches.

It should be required by law to notify tenants if bed bugs are present and should be immediately taken care of. I was bit and almost died. It took getting bit 3 times while staying at a friends to figure out what it was. After much research I found that many, many people are allergic to them and every time you are bit the reaction worsens. I took antibiotics and steriods for weeks to get well. Bed bugs scare the heck outta me. They stink too.

So I'm a little confused here. Obviously it would be in the best interest of the management to try to get rid of the bedbug problem so they can continue to sign leases, I'll grant you that. But why should this whole thing be thier responsibility? Some tenant (maybe several) brought these bedbugs into the apartments. Why not go after those tenants for the costs of bedbug remediation? My belief is management should require proof of renter's insurance (which provides liability coverage) before they let you move in. It's a bad situation for those affected, but hardly the management's fault. OK, ready to be blasted now...

Treat bedbugs like fleas. You just need to stay up on the problem until they are gone. Dry your things or tumble them in a hot dryer for an hour. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Every place you can get a crevice tool in-get it in there and vacuum it out. The bugs also get into places that are not material related so do not ignore any place. Get a spray bottle and spray suspected areas and bugs/eggs with over 91% rubbing alcohol. Eggs look like little sesame seeds. The larvae are little white icky squishy things. Gross. Vacuuming and wiping out places are your best friends in keeping the little critters at bay. They are not invincible. DO NOT SCRATCH BITES!! Get a cortizone dauber and daub bites. Scratching only makes things worse.

bedbugs are terrible but i especially feel sorry for the old peopl that get them. You can get rid of them yourself by using diatomaceous earth. I get mine from garden harvest supply

Quick fix for the problem. First off know that I am not INTO home remedies, this was given to me by a friend and I looked it us on GOOGLE. Take a bar of antibacterial soap and great out two or three tablespoons under your bottom sheet. This will stop leg cramps and kill all those little critters that live in the warmth of your sheets. Google says it doesn't work for everybody but it worked for me. I can tell when I need to change the soap, I will start to get leg cramps again. I try to change the soap every time I change the sheets. Down side is the bed smells like soap for the first couple of days and the sheets seem to be whiter.....go figure.

Wally Wise, my dear, you are adorable. Thank you for your service to the USA. I also live downtown and luckily, only a few apartments had bed bugs here. They actually brought in a bed bug smelling dog to sniff out any unseen culprits or for the people who thought they did not have them. These people were singled out and HAD to take care of the problem pronto. I believe the majority of the bed bugs were brought in by people bringing in other people from the shelters with ALL of their bed rolls, belongings, etc. that they have been dragging around for god knows how long on the streets. In the meantime, they finally isolated one laundry room on one floor to use for people with the bed bugs. In the meantime, I believe you will probably have to have your apartment professionally fumigated to get rid of these pests.

smithrock - your cat urinating / marking in your house is nothing to brag about............... Bed bugs are easy to get rid of - very safely too. Look up DE bedbugs ------ DE can be purchased in garden centers / some nurseries - very safe environmentally friendly product.

Tenants were told not to tell any one else in the building. We were told there was only one other apt that had bugs, but we knew of three others on our floor, and got a note from an apt on the 6th floor. OT8 mgmt. had our apt fumigated, and it did not help, they since decided to ignore us. How can we move while we still have bugs? Why werent we notified that the apt right next to ours had bed bugs? They fumigate just to say they tried something, but they dont care if the bugs are killed. This apt had bugs when we moved in, and now we are stuck in a living hell. Thank you king five, will you stay on top of this story? We suspect that mgmt will only wait for this story to calm down so they can get more leases signed by people who have no idea about this story, or even what a bed bug is.

smithrock - You CHOSE to live with your cat, whereas they did NOT choose to live with bedbugs and to invite them into their home. As a local with an infestation of ants AND mites - I know what you're going through. It's something that you will ALWAYS worry about now, and I am sorry that you have to go through this with your slumlord.
