ORCAS ISLAND, Wash. - A stolen airplane found in the San Juan Islands and chalk-outline feet drawn all over a burgled grocery store suggest that Washington's infamous teenage 'barefoot bandit' is back at it.
San Juan County sheriff's officials are investigating a plane from Anacortes that was found at the airport on Orcas -- a suspected modus-operandi of 18-year-old Colton Harris-Moore, who's wanted in scores of break-ins since he escaped from a halfway house in April 2008.
The single-engine plane is registered to Anacortes-based Alyeska Ocean, a Management Services company. Alyeska president Jeff Hendricks says the plane was stolen sometime on Wednesday and landed on Orcas Island Wednesday night. It had run off the taxiway and into a meridian.
Sandy Brandt's husband saw it near the runway and knew something wasn't right.
"Immediately he thought it was that Colton guy, or whatever is name is. Barefoot jerk," said Brandt.
A few people who got a good look at the plane say it appears whoever was at the controls did what's called a "dead stick landing," meaning the pilot killed the engine before touchdown. It's very dangerous, but very quiet if you're trying to avoid being caught.
Hendricks says the Skagit County Sheriff's Office will inspect the plane Friday for clues. Hendricks says he was also contacted by the Department of Homeland Security because of the plane's proximity to an area that's under restriction temporarily due to the Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.
Someone also broke into Homegrown Market on Orcas Island Wednesday night. Whoever broke in stole cash, blueberry cheesecake and organic produce. The crook destroyed the store's video surveillance machine and then took the time to draw large chalk footprints all over the store.
Last September, DNA evidence linked Harris-Moore to a burglary spree that happened right after a stolen plane made a hard landing at the airport.
The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce is warning its members that Harris-Moore may be back. Brandt and other business owners are tired of Harris-Moore's escapade. It's believed he stole a boat from the marina Brandt runs.
"The owner couldn't even face his boat anymore and sold it and we lost a customer," said Brandt.
