TACOMA, Wash. -- New animation shows what would happen to Tacoma if a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck.

Even knowing it's just data on a screen, just computer animation, it's a little eerie watching the Port of Tacoma and much of Fife get swamped by a tsunami.

The wave washes into Commencement Bay then spreads north and east through the port waterways, sloshing up onto streets and through areas of heavy industry, through marinas and waterside walkways.

Seven minutes after a major quake hits in Seattle, the water is at its highest -- six to 15 feet deep over much of the port, flooding a few feet deep beyond Interstate 5.

State disaster planners have done this kind of modeling for Seattle, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Anacortes, Whidbey Island, Everett, Bellingham and now Tacoma. They want local emergency agencies to use the graphic demonstrations as starting points as they develop serious quake and tsunami response plans.

The maps can show which neighborhoods are at the greatest risk, which might have natural evacuation routes and gathering points, which might need artificial berms or platforms for temporary refuge.

Next they want the same computer images for the San Juan Islands, as they continue to push people to get ready for the worst.

And of course they're using social networking to get the word out. On Facebook they are Project Safe Haven, and on Twitter @psafehaven.

To all you whiners out there, you would be the first to complain that "government" did nothing to warn you of the problem and take some kind of preventive measures. This isn't a scare tactic, it is a cold hard reality. Maybe you will be lucky enough to survive a major earthquake and tsunami.

I forget the Scientists name, but the study he did discovered, a great Cascadia Quake. It happens roughly every 500 years, the last one 250-270 years ago. Some of the data is Geological with mud and soil samples and testing, others are both Native American and Japanese lore and now documents that coralate with teh erath quakes. For the most part, it is the land dropping 3-5 feet and slowly rasing to to 3-5 feet every 500 years. This droping action of the Jaun de Fuca Plate, that rests between the pacific and northamerican plate that causes the Cascadia Quake. Yes, by the scietist calcuations a 20' foot tsunami will inadate the coast, and the puget sound area.

Looks like an improvement to me. Maybe it will wash away the smell as well.

Please do not panic. If we are injured during the Tsunami, we all have healthcare and the government will save us. Continue to send in your tax donations and they will take care of everything. (sarcasm) Maybe we should concentrate our virtual resources on the highest threat level, Rainier or any of the other active peaks in our state.

I am somewhat disappointed to learn a tsunami won’t be taking out Bellevue. . .

There are many faults that run under the Puget Sound, and some could spark a tsunami. There are records in mud deposits around the Sound that support these happening in the past. While many may think there's a tsunami risk only our coasts (there is one there), it can happen in the Sound as well. This isn't fearmongering - this could happen, and these maps were around long before this earthquake happened. If this were Japan ten days ago, and a map of Sendai were shown and how it could inundated by a tsunami, I feel like many might accuse the government of fearmongering. Of course, the risk of such an earthquake causing a tsunami in the Sound is low, but with most earthquakes, it's a matter of when, not if. While we shouldn't panic, the damage from the earthquake in Japan should give us pause and ask us how prepared we really are and how much more prepared we can be.

What a useless exercise, like the video of the viaduct collapsing. Are state workers being paid to come up with this scare campaign? Why not show a video of Godzilla attacking Pike Place Market while you are at it?

Like I said earlier, they are looking the wrong direction. Our threat is Mt. Rainier and a mudflow from it's sides shearing off. Look at Japan's Tsunami damage, it was the coast, not an inland body of water.

mgchawkfan6421 is thanking king 5 for helping them get prepared. Ha Ha. You should already be there unless you are a minor, (under 18 for you sheep). We'll see who's around and prepared when this event does happen.

I would be fascinated to see how such a tsunami could develop in Puget Sound. Perhaps they can also show us a tsunami in Lake Washington. Who knows, Pine Lake on the Sammamish Plateau might suddenly rise up and drown the Safeway! Okay, I could see how a landslide could generate a tsunami on small bodies of water. But what could anyone do about it? Seven minutes warning is no warning at all. There are really only two kinds of emergencies: critical emergencies and non-critical emergencies. Critical emergencies are when you need to react Right Now or you are dead. Non-critical emergencies are when, no matter what you do, you are dead. A Tacoma tsunami seems like a non-critical emergency to me. We should concentrate our resources on dealing with critical emergencies.

I'm missing something here, don't Tsunamis build in the open ocean, gain momentum, gain wave height in the shallows, then crash on shore? How can this happen? It seems a Tsunami in Puget Sound would not have the room to gain momentum to be catastrophic. I'm not buying this a bit. If we have a major quake, our problem is coming from the other direction, Rainier!

Washington State Department of Natural Resources web site has maps of tsunami in Puget Sound. At least copyeditor is a person who shows concern. These other idiots on here will be found dead WHEN a earthquake hits. Not IF WHEN. All you people who mock KING5 should just go to another web site that appeases you. THANK YOU KING5 for helping me be prepared!!!

Please provide us with an overlay for if a meteorite hits the same area just before the tsunami hits then Godzilla comes thru terrorizing the city. Thank you.

Could you please list some good links to these animations for the various cities around Puget Sound? I looked around the FB site, but I'm not a member and couldn't find anything. I looked at the Access Washington site but couldn't find them there either. Thanks for any info you can provide.
