KELSO, Wash. – A Kelso man arrested for allegedly assaulting a guard and vandalizing a rail car at the Port of Longview was the same person who confronted a TV news crew last Thursday, police said.

Ronald Stavas, 45, was arrested Monday night and booked into the Cowlitz County Jail on four felony charges: burglary in the first degree, assault in the second degree, intimidating a witness, and sabotage.

At his initial appearance in Cowlitz County Superior Court Tuesday morning, bail was set at $50,000 for the crimes, which allegedly occurred on Sept. 8.

Raw video: Longshoreman confronts KGW news crew

A witness told police he recognized Stavas after seeing video on KGW-TV of an angry man who confronted a news crew at the Longshoremen union hall.

Tension has been growing amid the union and the port, over the right to work at a new grain terminal in Washington state.

Hundreds of Longshoremen stormed the Port of Longview on September 8, overpowered and held security guards, damaged railroad cars, and dumped grain that was the center of a labor dispute, according to Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha.

A federal judge later ordered union protesters to stop using illegal tactics.

Also arrested on Monday was Shelly Porter, 39, of Longview. She was charged with criminal trespass for allegedly blocking a train.

KGW is the Portland sister station of KING 5.

Why do these people feel that they are above the law? I hope they lock this idiot up for good few years. When he realizes he no longer HAS A JOB, maybe he will learn to control himself.

seattlery, I'm blaming the whole union because they let this idiot speak for them, much like the union allowed a wildcat strike so their goons could disrupt business and damage property that wasn't theirs. The union's violent and childish antics do not represent the wholesome and benevolent atmosphere you are trying to portray. This idiot and that idiot Junior Hoffa have put the union in a very, very bad light.

I sure hope anger management is part of this guy's sentence. Can't imagine someone like that with any kind of a weapon.

We shouldn't blame the whole union for the actions of a few. It would be like blaming a whole company for the actions of a few employees or an entire country for the actions of a few of its citizens. This guy is in trouble, let him defend himself in court. By the way the ILWU does allot of charity work that is not reported by the media. This action was not sanction or condoned by the union but rather was the action of a few members. There are thousands of longshoreman up and down the cost who are law abiding citizens with family's who are also appalled by the actions of a few of there own members. So with that said please don't blame all unions and all of the members of the ILWU most are good hard working neighbors, dads, mothers, sisters and brothers.

It's funny that a union is using a phrase like "right to work".

I heard this guy rant on a website a friend showed me. His vocabulary is very limited. Consistnig of mostly the F word and CS word. He obviously has an anger problem and thinks "The man" (whoever that is) is out to get him. In fact no one is out to get them (the longshoremen) unable or unwilling to think on thier own they become infuriated by the leadership of the union. Now that behavior has him in jail on felony charges. I wonder who he is blaming now? when in reality he has only himself to blame for it.

Typical of unions. And we wonder why business owners are shipping manufacturing jobs over seas. I would do the same if my employees tried to go union. A lot of lazy, under educated idiots, making more money than people with a college degree. What good are unions when it's cheaper to ship raw materials over seas, manufacture the product, and ship back, cheaper than hiring union workers? Unfortunately, port jobs are one of those things you can't exactly ship over seas. Unions had their place in history. They were a good thing back when business owners were taking advantage of their workers. Now the pendulum has swung too far the other direction. Unions have far too much power. It's time we take some of it away.

Then people wonder why things spin out of control. I was taught from when I was a kid and I'm 63 now that someone who uses name calling and shouting people down as a way to influence an argument does so because they are on the wrong side of the position. Thats exactly what is going on here. This is what went on the other day when with a national audience Hoffa used a swear word during his rant about the Tea Party. Wether your for or against the Tea Party or organized labor or management isn't the issue the issue is nothing gets done wihen people lower themselves to this level. That is a fact.

Later the thugs may wonder why they stuck their necks out so far for union rhetoric and misinformation. I guess unions these days think they have to resort to violence to get their way. The reason we have courts, the NLRB and laws is to discourage this kind of behavior. Shame on the union bosses that have been working their people up and encouraging criminal behavior. Lock up the thugs.

@davesea, I used to be union, and I am certainly no thug and do not support these actions by these particular union members. However, your comments show you are ignorant as to the types of people who work in unions. Go back under the ignorant rock you crawled out from under. @ruthcordes, I agree, unions are a valuable thing to have, as well as a dangerous thing because of things like this. These particular union members do deserve to be arrested for their crimes. Union members are not above the law, nor anyones else. However, as long as the company has a contract with that union and unless the workers themselves dissolve the union and join another, the company is stuck with that union. But what the union members did is not indicitive of the union leadership itself all the time. This sounds like a few hotheads in the crown got the rest worked up to do things they probably would not have otherwise done.

Kinda funny a court has to make an order to tell someone to stop engaging in illegal activities. One would think that an arrest would be the answer to someone doing something illegal. . .

When this happened it brought back some history that happened in Everett in 1916. The IWW or commonly known as Wobblies stormed Everett with 300 /- men from Seattle which became known as the Everett Massacre. What are some of these "union" men thinking when they decide to go to "mob" tactics. They should all face jail time and pay for the damages. Unions have helped, but they can tear down as well, particularly when they decide they are the "be all" and think everything should go their way and only their way. There has to be compromises on both sides. I believe that due to what happened in Longview, the company should not have to deal with that particular union and can use the services of anyone they choose, including a different union.

I hope the courts give long prison terms to these union thugs. They're prefect examples of the kind of people you'll find in unions that think they are god's gift to mankind.
