SEATTLE - A viral outbreak sickened nearly 100 people on a Seattle-based cruise ship.

Disembarking passenger Kym Boisvert says her cabin on the "Sapphire Princess" was across the hall from infected passengers.

"You go on vacation, you pay quite a lot of money for this. It'd be nice if they gave you the courtesy, or at least get the sick people off," said Boisvert.

The outbreak compelled Boisvert and her husband, from San Diego, to curtail their ship board activities.

"We didn't mingle with anyone on the boat because we didn't want to get sick, so we pretty much stayed to our room."

Julie Benson, a spokesperson for Princess Cruises, identified this as an outbreak of Norovirus, a highly contagious but common gastro-intestinal virus that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Via phone from corporate headquarters in Santa Carita, Benson confirmed that 96 passengers sought medical attention on this returning seven-day Alaska trip. She said the crew designated what's called a "red level," calling for the implementation of the highest sanitary precautions. Benson discouraged the use of the word "quarantine," but did say that crew asked sick passengers to stay in their rooms. Staff took other visible precautions.

"All the time people were wearing latex gloves. They were being very careful and they made you sanitize your hands before you went into the food area and you weren't allowed to touch any of the food utensils," said passenger Cindy Hedum from Minneapolis.

Passenger Joyce Jordan from Redding, Calif. said she did not personally worry about getting infected.

"I took all the precautions, I washed my hands a lot," said Jordan.

After passengers disembarked, Benson says the crew went into "super-sanitize" mode, giving themselves an extra two hours to clean the empty ship before new passengers got on board at Terminal 91.

Seattle-based longshoreman, who serve in a variety of shore side functions for cruise ships, said they were notified of the outbreak.

"We're wearing gloves, latex gloves," said longshoreman Rodney Liverman. "You just take precautions. We're handling money, touching luggage, dealing with people."

His colleague, longshoreman Robert Bowen added," If people are really, really concerned, they have the masks."

Benson said passengers probably unknowingly carried Norovirus on board where it quickly spread. On Sunday afternoon, a whole new group of more than 2,000 passengers prepared to sail away, most knowing nothing of the outbreak during the previous cruise on the same ship.

finally had time to add to these even though it's been a week . We were also on this trip - delayed boarding the ship, almost not allowed to dock in Juneau, 1 1/2 hours later allowed, delayed well over an hour getting off in Seattle too - all because we were the "sick" ship - per one of the employees at the luggage area. Needed to take around 18 people off first and to the hospital. Hope everyone recovered~

We were on the ship prior to this one. 5-23 to 5-30-10. Seven.....Seven out of 14 got sick as a result of this cruise. Norovirus was alive and well when we left this ship. I lovePrincess....always have. BUT this virus was a stowaway prior to our cruise. I know they (employee's) did everything they could, but this is a virulent virus and is not easily eradicated. We believed this initially was a food poisoning, but as we later found out, it was the Norovirus. This is a virus that is becoming more and more obvious according to what I have read, and VERY hard to get rid of. Everyone needs to be on their best hygiene... wash hands, use sanitizer and be very viligent about others. There are older people and very younger people we need to be protective of. I believe in my heart if everyone knew there was a serious threat, all would have sanitized and been much more careful. We need to be....I don't want to stop cruising so.....be careful people with your hygiene. Wash your hands!

1. Don't blame the cruise ships/line/crew because 'stupid' inconsiderate people without trip insurance STILL climb on board "knowing" they are sick! 2. Just because you're jealouse of people that work hard so they can play hard (save & buy vacations that you can't) DON'T be so harsh on them. Cruises are not cargo ships packing in people. They are so beautifully designed, there is so much to do....It's NOT crowded! IF we would just WASH our hands!! A lot illness would circulate.

I was also a passenger on this cruise and was among the few who actually reported being affected with the virus. There was conciderably more than 96 cases on the ship. Probably closer to 500 cases, from what I learned from other passengers and crew. There were barf bags placed every 50' along our departure route from the ship. That should be a clue as to the severity of the outbreak. There was also an outbreak of the norovirus on at least the previous cruise. The ship was in a "code red" condition on boarding. Princess handled the situation very poorly and I pity the poor passengers embarking on the next cruise. I suspect by now there will be a conciderable number starting to come down with the virus. Too bad they don''t have the courtesy to warn passengers prior to embarcation of what they are in for. Princess should be centured for knowingling leading the poor lambs to the norovirus slaughter on this infected ship. The DOLLAR is their bottom line, not the welfare of their passengers

the norovirus has been spreading like wildfire around the seattle area, so i'm not surprised that someone inadvertantly took it on board one of the cruise ships. it's a nasty bug and tough to get rid of it, but I do believe the cruise lines do what they can to keep it from spreading.

A very large hotel casino in Vegas had to shut down a big section of their hotel a few years ago because of a similar illness. You just don't hear about it because they are not required to report it like the cruise lines are. I will not stop travelling because I may get sick. Anytime you are in crowded places you can pick up a virus.

The Sapphire Princess is nice as cruise ships go. The problem with cruise ships is that they are cruise ships -- they pack a lot of people in a confined space. The same is true of buses, elevators, and subways. Even offices. All it takes is one sick person to spread a virus to hundreds of others. If you're sick, stay home. And if you're not sick, the best way to stay not sick is to avoid crowds.

My wife and I were on this same boat, the cruise before this one (May 23-30). We were on the top deck (#14, Lido deck). The room directly across the hall from ours had a Do Not Disturb sign on it's door for the first 3 days of the cruise. We just thought they were a couple on their honeymoon or something. On day 4 of the cruise when we came back to our room after breakfast, we saw that there were a couple of crewmembers in what looked like full HAZMAT suits. They were in that room directly across from ours. We promptly went down to the Passenger Info desk and asked what was going on. We were told that the couple in that room got extremely sick and were no longer on the ship. For the rest of the cruise, the Do Not Disturb sign stayed on the door. I strongly believe that this room may be the source of origin for this viral outbreak. On our last day onboard, we were also not allowed to handle serving utensils in the buffet line. This is the last time Princess gets our money.

Like a bunch of cattle in a feed lot. Everyone jostling in line at the all-you-can-eat buffet. You can't really blame the cruise line. That many people crammed into a confined space. all it takes is one sick passenger or cruise employee to start the domino effect. ...yeah, there's a great way to spend a vacation.
