SEATAC, Wash. – Monday's snowstorm created havoc for passengers trying to get in and out of Sea-Tac Airport, but it's what happened at a hotel that left a bitter taste in the mouth of one man.

Many travelers had to camp out at the airport Monday night and into Tuesday morning. And even then, some were still waiting.

Joe Ahlenius spent the night at the airport sleeping on the pool toys he brought back from Hawaii.

"Everyone was laughing. A guy said 'I need to take a picture. You're weird and my sister likes weird people,'" said Jo.

Alaska Airlines says it can't get the Ahlenius' on a plane home until Wednesday.

"I thought 'Shoot. We've got to find a place to stay and I'm supposed to be at work today,'" said Ann Ahlenius.

Sea-Tac Airport officials say they do not expect weather-related travel delays on Wednesday – a busy travel day before the holiday.

Despite the fact that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is typically called the "busiest travel day of the year," Sea-Tac Airport officials say it's really not. They expect 89,000 travelers Wednesday and about 90,000 Sunday. They say some summer travel days reach 100,000 per day.

Surprise rate hikes at hotels

Puyallup resident Jason Anderson found a room at the Ramada Inn next to the airport, but you probably wouldn't call him lucky. He saw a Ramada ad for $53. He didn't know until he signed the receipt that he was charged $274.36.

"I couldn't believe that it was nearly $300 for one night," said Jason.

"I was just thinking they're taking advantage of people," said Meegan Anderson, Jason's wife.

Ramada's manager says charging that much, for what is normally a $60 to $80 room, is standard when the hotel fills up.

"It's the holiday season, the busiest travel day of the year. It's going to be this way through the rest of the travel season," said Brandon, the hotel manager.

The Washington state Attorney General's Office says it commonly gets complaints about hotels and motels raising their rates somewhat during a storm. It's only against the law if the amount is considered unscrupulous or offensive. Of course, that is open to interpretation.

It's call price gouging ! I think this should be brought to the attention of the Seattle/King County Attorney General.

I remember right after the Sept. 11th attacks, fuel prices went through the roof! The businesses that hiked the prices were basically shunned by many. I agree with many of the posters on here ~ write the corporate office, begin a facebook campaign, a basically just start blasting them on all fronts. There really should be a hall of shame for companies like this!!

Yes, charging ore during "high demand" (a storm, holiday, football weekend) is standard, but having $54 room online and 4X @ the front desk is not smart (or right). Previous commenter is correct, call or write to Ramada (be civil) and you'll get you money back. Look what bad press they are getting already. They'll want to take care of this. Lesson to other hoteliers: Gouging does not pay.

stay home and save money then you don't have to find a place to stay. Ramada is just a greedy company.

There is a difference between the supply-demand balance and price gouging the desperate. jackwong's personality shines through when he starts calling everybody else (but him) idiots because thinks he's far superior than they are. What a pleasant person.

It's simple supply and demand, you idiots. When the demand goes up, price has to go up to balance out the supply. That's why communist countries always run out of food... because they artificially determine the price.

Opportunists don't care about how much they hurt others. After all, the only happiness they ever know is money in their hands.

Acutally arebz..... my husband was stuck on the freeway for almost 5 hours and I did call the ramada and they told me what the price would be and also the price was the same on-line, not to mention the sign in front of the roach motel said $53.00. So yes they pushed the paper in from of him and he signed it....his fault sure..but after verifing the price numerous times I guess he assumed that the price didn't change. Really 4 times the amount of what the room normally cost. Then told me when I called that it's because of the holiday, you can actually stay there on Thanksgiving for 60.0 plus tax. They are taking advantage and then lied about it as well.......SO Brandon " the clerk " is full of it.....karma is all I can say...He also claims he told my husband what the price is, wierd he lied about that too. My husband said if he knew how much they where charging he would have walked out.......Again lies, lies, lies....

During hurricane Katrina in LA in 2005 hotel rates went from $29,99 to $375.00 a Nite. and some of those rooms did not even have power at the time. Kinda normal during a event that rooms are wanted so bad!

Email the Ramada's main office and complain, Be nice and no bad language, Tell them you will NEVER recommend their hotel again and will be posting on Facebook and telling all your friends and family how you were treated. Name names, dates and times. You will be suprised what kind of response you will get, I did this with Red Lion, Got a coupon for 2 free nights anytime...anywhere..

pffft..I'm sure the clerk told him exactly what the cost was going to be before he signed the charge. It's not the hotels fault that he didn't read the receipt before he signed. Are they taking advantage of the situation? Yeah, but then isn't that what Capitalism is all about?

From what the manager said on the news they charge that price around this time of the season. so i thought i would call in and see if that was true and no it was not true i was told over the phone if i want to stay nov 24 to nov 25 would be 89.99 before tax. so something is not right about this place. i would never stay at this place

They need to pass a law where the hotel must post a sign how much rooms are and let u know how much they are before u stay the night there. the guy who was charge all most 300.00 was my cousin and i think that is b.s that they can do that to anyone and get away with it

After the Monday Night Football snowstorm years ago, I tried to take the bus home, but the bus stopped at the Burien Transit Center and announced they weren't going any further because the roads were so bad. I hopped on a bus back to downtown, and went to the Sheraton. Not only did they have room, but the prices were reasonable. It was a bit of a shock, but they will be on my mind the next time I am stuck in a surprise snowstorm.

Unfortunately this happens a lot! I too would consider this unscrupulous and I hope the hotel gets investigated for this. I will never stay at this hotel again and we stay at Seatac over night when flying in and out as we are in Central WA. I prefer the Red Lyon, Hyatt and Hiton at Seatac. I wonder what they were charging people? My husband and I managed a restaurant on Snoqualmie Pass for 19 years and it was adjacent to a hotel. The current Hotel owner would jack rates up when the pass closed. Its defiantly not the way to build a repeat customer base as shown by his empty hotel. He choose not to renew the lease on the restaurant and plans on opening it himself.I wonder if he will have two sets of menus with higher prices on one set for when the pass is closed?

Gotta love capitalism! In all fairness, business owners could show a little compassion during a storm and still make a profit.
