SEATTLE – The man accused of murdering a Seattle police officer spoke out in a King County courtroom Thursday, comparing two sheriff's deputies involved in an alleged assault to Hitler and Stalin.

Christopher Monfort, 41, is charged with aggravated first-degree murder for the death of Officer Timothy Brenton on Oct. 31, 2009. If convicted, Monfort would face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Monfort was attending a case setting hearing when he went on an angry rant. Before the hearing began, he started yelling about former King County sheriff's deputy Paul Schene, who's was put on trial for allegedly assaulting 15-year-old Malika Calhoun in a holding cell. That case ended in a hung jury last January.

"The police in our society are employees. They work for us," said Monfort. We depend on them to do exactly the opposite of what Deputy Schene and Deputy Bruner did. We depend on the police to protect us from the police as well. If the police are wrong, we depend on the police to cross the blue line of silence."

Bruner is Dep. Travis Bruner, who was also in the cell but was not implicated in the alleged assault on Calhoun. Monfort compared the deputies to past dictators.

"This world has seen that kind of behavior before. We saw it in World War 2 with Stalin as he took power away from the people and abuse his police authorities. We saw it with Mussolini and we saw it with Hitler," said Monfort.

Monfort also asked people in court how they thought America's founding fathers would have reacted if their daughters were treated the same way.

"I can't imagine it would have been a happy or a peaceful manner," said Monfort.

His attorney reportedly tried to quiet him while his mother sat in court with her head in her hands.

Monfort was brought into court in a wheelchair. Speaking with a lisp, he said half of his face is paralyzed and that "I can't walk. I'm dead from the waist down." He was injured when he was arrested at his Tukwila apartment building on Nov. 6.

Monfort has also been charged with the attempted murders of Brenton's partner, Officer Britt Sweeney, as well as that of a detective during his arrest. Monfort is also charged with arson and attempted murder in the firebombing of several Seattle police cars.

The founding fathers probably would have actually disciplined their daughters at young ages so they wouldn't turn out to be little criminals who think they are princesses.

Its good to see that these blogs aren't censored so heavily that only the police state party line is allowed (like at the Times). The government has been waging war against the people for decades and it gets worse every year. There will be more and more good citizens who are willing to fight back against the front line Gestapo troops in blue shirts. For those who use the term "good cop" it is an oxymoron. There is no such thing as a "good" swine except the kind that gets served for breakfast with the eggs. And of course the National Socialist government is persecuting their POW, and their propaganda machine is running full tilt drumming up hate. Many sheep would rather go along than fight back or even speak out against tyranny. It's good to see some men like "repetitively" speaking out against the police state tyranny that now rules our once-free nation.

Rep, for the record... I enjoyed your attempts to slight me... now it's time to don my jack-boots and board my black helicopter so I can keep a careful eye on you and your "patriot" rabble! By the way.... this younger generation you so defame? You raised them. You set the example into motion. You, not some nebulous government police state, are to blame. I understand you think I am some blind footed fool who marches lock-step to the drums of propaganda. I get that. I appreciate you actually even believe it Rep. But Rep.... here's the other reality...you and those like you are irrational, and (with the exception of your rhetoric to inspire the less stable in the fringe of your disjointed confederacy to violence) utterly silly. The more you people talk.... the more the rest of America agrees with me. Keep talking. Keep praising the concepts of this world's Monforts. Keep making it easy for me. I look forward to seeing you pave the road more in the days ahead. Be well in life brother..

For the information of anyone who cares, I was in the Tea Party movement until the repugnican mainstream co-opted it. I write to my representatives and express my opposition to the police state using my name and I spoke up at my caucus a and county conventions and supported others who did at the state republican convention in 2008. One does not get elected as a delegate if people disagree with his ideas.

There of course is no accountability, is there rep... you can say these things without having someone calling BS to your face.... you can say them and not have people stare at you like you are nuts. Oh sure... you might get someone like me challenging your statements... but there's no accountability. You can say whatever you want... no one can see you. You can hide. Me I call Monfort a murderer in public. Do you go to city council meetings and say.... "you know that Monfort who killed the cop and tried to kill two others... he makes a lot of sense". Do you stand up in church and tell your fellow perishioners this? Of course you don't Rep... you know they'd all stare at you like you were crazy. "Crazy" Rep. Stark raving nuts. Yessir. Perfect handle by the way. Just get in line and say "Yessir". The same logic you would employ to justify "collateral damage" (innocent civilians killed by soldiers in war) can be used here. Mr. Monfort "killed the wrong cops" as these were (presumably) "good cops". His goal (and increasingly the goal of the people) is to re-examine their blind faith in those given authority over them.

Nah... Many are doing the right thing... and some (a very small %) are not. This allegation that cops are routinely executing people is sheer myth. Has it happened? Yes. Does it routinely happen? No. We've a few posters going on about the King County police officer who took down that girl in the holding cell... Why do you keep pretending he wasn't arrested? He was. Or pretend that he wasn't fired? He was. Again, Monfort not only failed to target the right officer... he didn't even get the right police agency. And we also see his initial action was to attack public facilities, damaging public property (you will be paying for), setting additional incendiary devices with the intent of killing or injuring firefighters who came to fight the vehicle fires. This guy was hoping to kill/injure anyone associated with the government. So... Who would I rather stand with? Certainly not Monfort or the people lamely trying to rationalize his murderous acts with some inane Tea Party rhetoric.

random!=irrational. He makes some valid points, even if they are unrelated to his defense of his acts. I have no hatred for cops but I can say that I was ready to volunteer 15 minutes of my time in a cell with that SOB that beat up a 15 year old - cops are out of control in this country, and while there are some who are doing the right thing there are many who are not. When citizens are dying at the hands of our protectors, its time to re-evaluate how we're being protected. As long as we have folks blindly following the status quo, that's not gonna happen.

yessir - You said "He targeted two police officers he knew nothing about." Yes, and that's why he is amazingly rational. He attacked good cops for what cops in general, have come to represent, to a lot of people. You don't want to talk about the legitimate reasons for his actions. He didn't just kill people at random. He killed someone based on what the uniform has come to represent. The answer should be "deal with the reasons why the uniform has come to represent what he was trying to kill." It's time to learn from our mistakes, otherwise we repeat the same mistakes...

Amazingly rational? His speech certainly sounded well rehearsed, and likely lessens his ability to use a psych defense, and instead moves him into the realm of a domestic terrorist. Consider that he directly targeted a US government representative. As for his actions, he didn't even target the specific subject of his fury. He targeted two police officers he knew nothing about. An assessment that "all" police are murderers is ludicrous. An assessment that "all" police are corrupt is ludicrous. Even in Monforts own twisted view of government and the police, his decision to murder an officer(s) (he tried to kill at least 3), he chose officers that may well have been everything good (in his estimation) of what police officers should be. The point is... he didn't truly care "who" he murdered. Rational? No... his violence was utterly random and therefore, any belated attempt to assign political justification to it, is likewise utterly random. No rational... at all

repetivity - You are absolutely right! Good job. The guy brings up some very good points. He tried to make valid points while he was in college and thereafter but nobody was listening. He escalated is game in order to get full and undivided attention. The guy is rational and makes a lot of sense. Blasting those cops was not the answer, but obviously his other attempts fell on deaf ears. Let's not forget that there were at least 3 other people that blasted cops within a 6 month period of time. Executing him is not the answer. He appears to be a person that has something to offer to society. He's an educated person that is pretty much misunderstood. He can have a radio show and tell why he did what he did. He would probably have very high ratings and it would be far more interesting than Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Howard Stern. Give him a show on NPR Radio.

He sounds amazingly rational to me. Those of you who want to call him mentally ill have a difficult case to prove. His hatred is no different than those who hate any other class of individual based on their color. His hatred is for the color blue. Are there reasons to hate blue. Absolutely and without a doubt. Police are not Saints. Those of you who blindly support them ARE blind. However, just as I would not condone random acts of violence against someone based on their skin color, I do not condone this random act of violence based on their uniform color. We are all entitled to our prejudice and hatred so long as we do not hurt others as a result. That is the essence of what America stands (or stood) for.

And his lawyer with the "No, don't, stop, etc etc etc...." IMO staged, the lawyer wanted it out in the media and will use it in some sort of defense scenario. The police could have easily put a round in his head at the scene.... Yet there he is... ranting madly in custody, despite the fact that he tried to kill yet another officer at the time of his arrest. Same thing with the guy who shot and killed a King County Police officer back in 2002. He could have easily been shot and killed during his arrest. Yet he was arrested unharmed and stood trial. These claims of judge, jury and executioner that you hear out of a few posters on these blogs are the ridiculous rants of people who've probably been on the wrong side of the law in their lives and hold a pathetic resentment to what they perceive as "authority figures".

Imagine you end up in a fire fight and your back up is an officer that you had arrested a week earlier for DUI. Rather uncomfortable I think. This is the most common reason cops will not report other cops. That said, we do have SOME very fine individuals working in law enforcement as well. Thumbs up to the great cops, thumbs down to the cops making everyone in law enforcement look bad.
