SEATTLE - A made for TV movie about Amanda Knox's murder trial airs Monday night on the Lifetime channel, but not without controversy.
The Lifetime movie is called "Amanda Knox: Murder On Trial In Italy."
Lawyers for Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, on Saturday threatened legal action against the Lifetime channel if the movie airs.
Knox's family has said they were horrified by the trailer. And so apparently was Amanda. Her stepfather Chris Mellas said she actually got sick when she saw the clips.
The movie stars Hayden Panettiere and Marica Gay Harden.
A clip of the trailer sounds like this:
Voice of prosecutor actor: "I suspect this started off as some sort of sex game."
Panettiere: "That's not true!"
Prosecutor actor: "I believe Amanda orchestrated the attack."
Family members said many of them will refuse to watch it.
Although Lifetime is not scrapping this film, it did cut the graphic murder scene out of the final version - the scene depicting Amanda stabbing her roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Knox and her ex-boyfriend were convicted and sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for Kercher's murder. Both deny any wrong-doing and are appealing.
Douglas Preston, a family friend, says the family's biggest concern is the movie doesn't paint an accurate picture.
"The film is filled with all the erroneous and manipulated facts that were presented at the first trial, which have now been thrown out by this appeals court, so it's based on erroneous facts," said Preston.
And, he said, the movie could impact their appeals.
"I don't think it will have any legal impact on her appeal, but it does have an impact on public opinion," Preston said. "People who get their opinion and facts from cable television movies are idiots."
On Lifetime's website, there are already more than a 135 comments on the film. Some saying they are disappointed in Lifetime for airing this movie.
One person writes she'll never watch Lifetime again. Others say Lifetime has every right to air the movie.
Knox's family plans to issue a statement after the movie airs on Lifetime.
