GRANDVIEW, Wash. (AP) — The state Ecology Department is considering a proposal to ban spraying for adult mosquitoes near rivers, ponds and lakes over environmental concerns.
The insecticide spraying isn't good for fish or other wetland creatures.
Spraying would still be allowed in cases where the mosquitos carry West Nile virus or other diseases, and spraying for mosquito larvae would continue as normal because it's considered less environmentally harmful.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that some residents are protesting the proposal. A public hearing at the Moses Lake Fire Department last week attracted an overflow crowd of more than 200 people.
