LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) — Cowlitz County authorities say a 17-year-old Longview boy was burned when he lit a cigarette while trying to siphon gas from a car.

Fire and Rescue Lt. Jason Sanders says the boy suffered first- and second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body during the incident early Friday. The teen, whose name was not released, was taken to St. John Medical Center in Longview to treat the burns on his pelvis, hands and feet.

Sheriff's deputies say the incident occurred in the Beacon Hill area north of Longview. They say the teen was trying to siphon gas from a family member's car.

17, siphoning gas, smoking (underage). Does he have the highest IQ in his family? I suspect he needs to thank everyone reading this article for paying his current medical bills and future SSI disability payments. This is why we pay taxes.

morganthomas-what makes you think he was stealing it? It was a family member's car. Maybe they knew about it.

I hate to pile on the guy..he's hurting for that mistake, but how DUMB can you be? I smoke like a chimney and EVEN I can wait long enough to fill a gas can before I light up! Jeez! LIGHTING a smoke while siphoning gas? Reminds me of people who STILL bring BBQ's into the house during power outtages. What ever happened to COMMON SENSE!

Dummy! I tried only one time to siphon gas when I was young, and I swallowed more than made it in the tank. But to stoop to that level of stupidity I did not. Has does that go - once burned twice never?
