7.1 earthquake strikes off New Zealand, no tsunami warning issued

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of New Zealand Thursday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake happened at 4:37 p.m. local time about 103 miles northeast of the city of Gisborne. Preliminary data shows it was about 19 miles deep.

No damage or injuries have been immediately reported.

As of 10:00 a.m., there were no tsunami advisories or warning related to the earthquake.
