Green River flood would move KingCo jail inmates

Posted on November 5, 2009 at 10:32 AM

SEATTLE (AP) — The King County Council has approved agreements with Pierce and Kitsap counties to take some inmates from the Regional Justice Center in Kent in case the Green River Valley floods this winter.

The agreements approved Monday would transfer 168 inmates to Pierce County and 114 to Kitsap County.

Meanwhile, state Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler (CRYD' ler) says he'll ask the Legislature for power to create a joint underwriting association to offer flood insurance in the valley.

Insurance companies would be required to form the not-for-profit association to provide flood coverage that individual companies decline.

Officials are preparing for possible Green River flooding because of a weakened abutment at the Howard Hanson Dam.
