PROSSER, Wash. - The Benton County Sheriff's Office says a 5-year-old boy has died after falling into an irrigation canal.

The child was playing with two siblings Saturday afternoon and somehow tumbled into the canal and was carried away by the water current.

Sheriff's officials say an airplane tracked the child and searchers found him in water at the Chandler Dam.

Deputies performed CPR before he was taken by ambulance to Kadlec Medical Center. The child died shortly after.

Maybe the parents were drunk. Alcohol is getting the rap for everything else.

This is a truly sad event, and I feel for the parents. Having lived in the area for several years working in orchards I am familiar with the different aspects of irrigation canals. There are no trespassing signs posted frequently, yet in spite of that I have seen local children riding inner tubes and rafts on the waters in these canals; and hunters using the canal roads putting farmers and ditch riders at risk. The sides are typically steep and slippery, quite challenging even for an adult. Kennewick Irrigation District has a website (kid.org) that has a safety video for children. It is short, cute and to the point. There are also links to the other districts. I don't know if they teach canal safety in the schools; if they don't perhaps the school districts should consider it. You can do your part by encouraging safety education.

These canals are extremely dangerous. When there is a fence around these things, up to a two foot gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence is present. Usually, about a foot gap. Any kid or animal can go underneath. Something needs to be done. I have seen these gaps across the street from schools and right next to playgrounds. It is unacceptable.
