Police now say a Sedro-Woolley boy found dead in his bedroom on Sunday accidentally shot himself.
Police originally thought the boy’s mother’s boyfriend shot 4-year-old Dwayne Kerrigan because he fled from the scene, but they now say that is not the case
Family members say the boy was found in his bedroom Sunday morning. His mother rushed in after hearing a gunshot.
Neighbors heard noises too. Ken Cornett's wife looked out the window.
“She saw a person in a red shirt running down the street,” said Cornett.
Police believe that could have been Trevor Braymiller, a convicted felon and the boyfriend of the little boy's mother. He hitched a ride out of town before police showed up.
Investigators found a gun dumped just a few doors down at a church.
It's not known why Braymiller ran from the home. He surrendered to police on Monday and is being held on $750,000 bail.
Prosecutors were talking with police Monday about what charges Braymiller will face. They say it was his gun that killed the boy. As a felon he should not have had one.
The boy's family released a statement Monday night, thanking everyone for their support and love during an incredibly difficult time.
"We are deeply mourning the loss of a wonderful, sweet, and incredible son/grandson/nephew who brought joy and happiness to everyone who knew him," they said. "We would appreciate our privacy as we are all devastated by this senseless tragedy. Dwayne's father, Chaz , has been trying to be a part of his son's life for quite a while now. He and the mother have been involved in an ongoing custody dispute and were about to enter into mediation for visitation rights. Now he will never get the opportunity to see his SON again. We love and miss Dwayne very much."
