TACOMA, Wash. - One man was killed and two critically injured when their car crashed in a north Tacoma neighborhood near Point Defiance Park.
Witnesses say the car was going about 120 mph around 11 p.m. Monday when it went airborne into a parked pickup truck and ended up in a yard.
All three of the men inside were ejected. One flew into a tree and died at the scene.
Laurie Cassaw, who lives across the street from the accident scene, said she and her husband ran to the accident and found the victims.
"We found two and then my husband found one in the bushes," said Cassaw.
The surviving two were taken to Tacoma General Hospital.
Vassault Street is a main arterial in North Tacoma, and residents who live along the street have witnessed speeding cars and accidents for years.
"We've lived here for 34 years and this isn't the first time something's happened, but this is the first time somebody's died," said Laurie Cassaw. "This street is a thoroughfare for kids that race ... even the city buses race up this hill. It's unimagineable the amount of people that speed along here. Kids come over the top of the hill up here and half of the time they're airborne."
Cassaw says that while residents have asked the police to patrol the area more they haven't asked the city to take any preventative action such as putting in speed bumps. She says at one time they did talk about the possibility of installing a roundabout at the top of the hill but that was dropped because the street is a major thoroughfare and it's a city bus line.
