South Sound drivers know traffic around Joint Base Lewis McChord can compete with Seattle's rush-hour any day of the week.
JBLM backups and slowdowns have gotten so bad, they're almost a regular speed-bump on summer weekends.
That's partly why on Tuesday, federal authorities awarded a $5.7 million grant for improvements to the Freedom Bridge over Interstate 5 in Lakewood.
Plans call for an additional eastbound ramp to the bridge, a second left turn lane to the I-5 southbound off-ramp, upgrades to traffic signs and additional pedestrian facilities for increased public safety.
The grant was awarded to the City of Lakewood, who will work in conjuction with the Washington State Department of Transportation and Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
