SEATTLE—A KING 5 investigation that exposed food stamp fraud is again recognized as one of the best journalistic accomplishments of 2011. Nominations for the 33rd Annual News & Documentary Emmy® Awards were announced July 12 by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and KING 5’s Their Crime, Your Dime is among them.
"The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is delighted to honor the outstanding work being done by journalists and documentarians throughout the television industry,” said Malachy Wienges, NATAS chairman.
In a series of reports, investigative reporter Chris Ingalls, photojournalist Steve Douglas and executive producer Kellie Cheadle revealed the government had been ineffective in combating growing fraud in state and federal welfare programs. Their Crime, Your Dime is nominated in the category for Outstanding Regional News Story – Investigative Reporting.
“This series showed the power of television for investigative journalism. Using well-placed sources and hidden-cameras, viewers saw multiple examples of fraud. They watched as some of those people caught on camera ran or tried to deny their actions. And they watched state officials try to explain rampant fraud,” said Mark Ginther, executive news director of KING 5, KONG 6/16 and NWCN. “This series resulted in a major overhaul at the state level that will save taxpayers millions of dollars and will get the benefits to those who truly deserve them.”
The series has already been honored with several national awards, including the 2011 George Foster Peabody Award, the 2011 National Headliner Award and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award.
The News & Documentary Emmy® Awards will be presented on Monday, October 1, at a ceremony in the Time Warner Center in New York City. The event will be attended by more than 1,000 television and news media industry executives, news and documentary producers and journalists. Emmy® Awards will be presented in 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview and Best Documentary, among others.
