"Is there a minimum number of "clicks" that you are supposed to use when using your turn or merge signal that is required by law?"

Carol

Federal Way

By "clicks," I presume you are referring to how many times your turn signal flashes before you make a turn or change lanes.

The next time you are stopped at an intersection, look at the vehicles around you. Compare how quickly your turn signal clicks versus the other vehicles. They aren't all consistent, so there is no law in regards to "clicks" because it can't apply evenly to everyone.

The issue isn't so much about clicks as it is distance and momentum.

When making a right turn at a red light or stop sign, you must come to a full stop. The law doesn't say how many seconds you need to be stopped, but your car must cease moving forward, period.

"If you don't come to a full stop, you're at risk of a $124 fine," says Trooper Keith Leary, Washington State Patrol.

If you're turning right or left in traffic, changing lanes or merging, you must signal at least 100 feet before you make your move. At 60 mph, that's going to be about 1.2 seconds.

Although 100 feet is what's required under the law, Leary says for your safety and that of the other drivers, you may want to give more than that.

"You're indicating to other drivers about your intentions. At the minimum, it's 100 feet, but you want to give it as much time as you can so they know what you are doing," said Leary.

The Washington state Dept. of Licensing suggests that you have a four-second gap between vehicles that you are trying to merge between.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Everyone is right, if you turn on your indicator or even look like you want to move into a lane, the person behind almost always speeds up and cuts you off. At the same time, I don't expect someone to slow down and let me in either. It's up to me to merge safely, not them to hit their brakes to let me in because I'm 10ft from my exit. Hitting your brakes on the freeway when everyone is moving at 60 , has a huge ripple affect to the traffic behind you when the freeway is full. You don't see it, but it ends causing near a stand still behind you. Then you have the dummys that just have to be in your lane, so ease up a bit to give them enough room to squeeze in, and then they slow down!!!! Not even keeping up with traffic. Those are the people that make the others speed up to keep them from coming in, and its applied equally to everyone. Unfortunately, there are no signs on cars to let you know how the person driving it is going to react.

(A little nerd humor.) Signals are a BASIC statment. They are supposed to be a goto not a come from. I too ride a motorcycle, but I signal and usually only change lanes when there is plenty of room. However, I have seen people speed up to keep me from changing lanes too. Not to mention the people that try to change lanes into me without looking because there is no large cage there so there must be room to move over.

I use mine just as I am changing so the a-hole in the lane can't speed up to cut me off...

Do not use turn signals in Michigan or Florida. It is definitely a sign to not let you change lanes. I checked with relatives who live there about this and they agreed. Turn signals are for wimps. Florida is the worst. Almost totally alone going across the state in right hand lane. Doing speed limit (70). Cars come speeding up from rear with high beams on, tailgate you at about 6 feet for a while then zoom around honking horn and giving finger! I95 in Fort Lauderdale during rush hour is the craziest thing you have ever seen. Straight out of Mad Max. We have nothing even close to that.

Everyone is hitting the point home with all the rules of the road. Signal, look over shoulder, merge. 2 seconds of distance atleast for stopping. Signal then Brake for turn. Too bad everyone else is driving up the exit olny lane and cutting in at the last minute. Riding the shoulder on the onramp to pole posistion in front of you. Hey there is 1 and 1/2 car lengths ahead of you, even though their are 5 behind you, someone wants infront of you. Pace car driver in the passing lane. The HOV lane passer. My personal favorite. the guy at a downtown intersection trying to make a turn, sitting thru 2 lights, waiting to let all the people in the cross walk cross. Once the big herd crosses, and there are onesies and twosies crossing, you have to push thru or you will never make the turn.

using turn signals is a REQUEST to move to another lane in front of someone, not a demand, Alot of people signal and just come over, reguardless if there is room or not, wtf

I am a motorcycle rider and I don't signal at all in heavy automobile traffic cause I don't want the stupid cage drivers to know where to cut me off next. Half the reason people on bikes are perceived as dangerous is because we have to try and avoid all the a__hats in their cars who are not looking around like they should be. Riding on I-5 is like trying to slalom ski on an ever changing course and you never know when you are gonna come across driver who either doesn't know they just cut you off or doesn't care and will just do it in spite of you - cause they are "the biggest vehicle".

It says in the book that you are required to read before you get a license 100ft. How do so many morons pass the dang test?

digiwave, in my travels, I have seen just as bad if not worse driving all over, it is NOT just a Seattle thing! But people sure do not like to use those signals and they need to be sent back to drivers ed again.

Im with hope, they are great and help IF the other driver doesnt speed up and sit on the corner of your bumper so you cant move over. Very few people will actually slow down that 1mph to let you over because then they are one car farther back. And yes i agree with the others, turn the stupid thing on BEFORE you turn not as your turning. Oh and turn it off once you have made your move that would be nice too. Okay thats my rant

But if you turn your turn signal on too far in advance of changing lanes or merging then that just gives the other guy more time to speed up so you can't merge or change lanes! People can be so rude sometimes!

horseboy took the words right off of my keyboard! I always thought that in Seattle, turn signals were optional equipment that nobody ordered for their vehicles. The driving practices of Seattle area drivers are the most egregious that I have ever seen and I've driven all over the country.

Whats a signal? I live in Bellevue and I don't think they put them on our cars over here. It sounds way to difficult to implement in my driving and I'm way too selfish to use the extra energy in my finger to do this to try and alert others.

Now if we can get everyone to use that signal. I don't know how many times I've been cut off because someone just changes lanes and doesn't bother to make sure there is sufficient space to make the change and didn't signal so I could possibly give them the room they need. Not to mention the number of times people just hit the brakes to turn and didn't signal in advance. I think people should have to take the driving test every other time they renew their drivers license. People get lax n their driving after they've been driving for a while, and having to retake the driving test might just remind them what the rules of the road are, who know maybe some just might not get their license renewed. Not that it would stop them from driving anyway, but it's a thought.

Please remember folks, it's a warning not an explanation! Signal BEFORE you brake when you are going to slow to make a turn. Thank you.
