SEATTLE - More than 400 homeless men, women and children will have nowhere to go by the end of next week. A Seattle homeless shelter network says it will close 11 out of its 15 shelters.

The Seattle Housing and Resource Effort (SHARE) says the lack of city funds is prompting the closures.

SHARE is funded by the City of Seattle and supplies bus tickets to and from area homeless shelters. Volunteers are usually homeless themselves. The program has been battling funding issues for two years. Most recently, a group of homeless people camped outside former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels' home in protest.

Leaders with the Seattle Union Gospel Mission say 400 more homeless out on the street will put further strain on the shelters that are already bursting at the seams.

"The closure of these shelters would mean 25 percent more homeless on the streets of Seattle each night," says Mike Johnson, Director of the men's shelter with the Seattle Union Gospel Mission. "We are already full. We want to make room for others, but it's difficult."

Johnson says he may try to open more beds for other homeless who may not have a shelter.

SHARE provides shelters in area churches.

No children or pets stay at Share's downtown Church shelters. Nickelsville, Tent City 2, and Tent City 3 do a better job of keeping the homeless in a more manageable situation while respecting the homeless their civil rights.

Since more people will soon be homeless when their unemployment benefits expire, the overcrowding of people living in the bushes will increase drastically.

Gov't would have the money if they follow one simple plan: 1. Quit spending on BS projects. 2. Cut the "giving away" of our money to other countries until OUR problems are fixed. 3. Cut the defense spending greatly, we don't need 1200 intelligence gathering agencies that spy on our own people. 4. No more free ride for other countries. 5. Cut back on work visa programs so our own citizens can get jobs. We want to be the "good guys" in the international eyes but where do you draw the line? Lead by example, our nation should be judged on how it treats the least of its citizens, we have failed miserably. You have career criminals (I mean politicians) that are making a quarter of a million dollars a year when it should be enough to have the "Honor" of serving, cut back on their budgets, staff etc. as we don't need more idiots pushing paper. There are so many ways to save on so many levels that these idiots have even touched. LET"S GET REAL.

prometheus63 I agree with most of what you say...but maybe if our government would stop sending so much of our money to other countries and help our people first (and stop giving illegals any services) then we wouldn't have homelessness as bad as it is. Don't blame Mr G., he shouldn't have to feel worthless because he was smart and made a lot of money from hard work. Since when is it the responsibility of the rich people in this country to take care of others? Yes, it would be nice, but it's not their job. We need to lean on our government to end the free ride to other countries.

Instead of raising money for shelters. It's summer time lets get them jobs. By the time winter gets here they will have their own place. Get them off the dole.

Such a travesty. We need to raise revenues whatever way we can to make sure we can provide for the homeless. Seattle picked summer to close it down, but when winter comes, it will be brutal. If any homeless dies from this, the blood is in all of our hands! And believe me, PEOPLE WILL DIE!

It is Scott Morrow's intent to hold the city hostage and threaten and intimidate officials in compling with him.....that is his way....these people don't want to end homelessness.....the states/cities 10 year plan to end homelessness is B.S......without homeless people these hijackers would have no jobs....all homeless poeple are to them is blood they can leatch off of.....

Mary....the bus tickets are needed to get homeless to and from shelters..SHARE policy is that all shelter participants board the bus as a group and enter the shelter as a group in order to insure to the neighborhood that the group is policing its self to provide health and safety....most common boarding spots are DT Seattle since the core of Social Services are in P square (IE) foodlines, hygyene centers ,mental and physical health....now saying that.....it is my believe that these bus tickets are being mis-used.....I have seen shelter partipants sell their tickets for half face value...most of this happens at the Millionair club and Casa Latina....If you remember SHARE had this same issue of needing Money for Bus Tickets ...due to someone breaking in to thier office and stealling 30,000 worth....you are right mary ...most if not all the churches do not provide funding or recieve funding from the state or SHARE/WHEEL.

What we need is a government that gets out of our way and allows small businesses to open and provide JOBS for the people. All the taxes to support "charity" only makes it worse.

Great job of playing out a story. When did UGM start providing shelter beds to people who just need shelter, not drug and alcohol recovery? That picture of tents looks familliar. Aww Nickellsville. Why is SHARE doing an interview at Nickellsville? $3,200.00 a month on printing? $1,400 a month on telephone? Buckle down people, and maybe you'll find an extra $50,000. Stop playing games guys. Seattle is getting sick of it. Do you need a new drumstick yet Scott?

I'm confused by this story. SHARE gets $50,000 a year to provide bus tickets to the homeless to get the churchs who provide shelters. SHARE doesn't provide the shelters, only the bus tickets TO the shelters. But the guy who runs SHARE says that they are closing shelters because there is no longer $50,000 for them. Are the churchs getting funs to open their doors? Doesn't sound like it. So how is it that the shelters are closing? If the homeless have a shelter in a particular church, why do they need a bus ride everyday to that same church? This story makes no sense, other than te fact that SHARE has lost their funding, which sounds like funding for bus rides. Can someone please explain this, as King 5 hasn't. Thank you.

I agree with prometheus63, but the rich didn't get where they are by giving their money away. Perhaps if we leveraged the cost by having the state pay for it, it would be a smaller portion of the state budget compared to the budget of one tiny, itty-bitty city like Seattle. (it's so small!) And why do they stay downtown and all that, anyway? What if they had their own community out-of-sight and out-of-mind? If you treat them as a group, you can save big buck$ in purchasing supplies and all that. Isn't that something that could help people find the political cojones to help these people in a sustainable manner?

I find news like this extremely disturbing. It is the 21st century, in what the world considers to be the most affluent country on the planet ... and we have people who are now or are going to be living in the streets ? What kind of a nation are we that would allow our fellow Americans and fellow human beings to be thrown into the streets because they haven't any money or means of support ? It is absolutely unconscionable that there are those among us with fantastic wealth living in fifty thousand square foot mansions on the lake ( YOU know you are Mr. G) ... while fellow citizens with children are huddled under trees in the parks and under the bridges nearby. I challenge Mr. G and others of his privilege to part with 1 % of their vast wealth to keep the shelters open and to fund the opening of new ones where they are needed. In this time of economic upheaval and misfortune for so many people ... It is the Humane and the Right thing to do. Peace .... Prometheus

Arizona? Get real. If you don't have air cond in the 120-plus heat, you're toast. Maybe the beach cities of L.A., but it ain't easy being homeless, what if you land on someones turf.
