Study: Crib bumpers continue to cause infant deaths

A new study shows a jump in infant deaths due to crib bumpers in recent years.

There are new worries this week about crib bumpers.

A new study by the Journal of Pediatrics found a jump in the number of deadly accidents. The number of babies who died due to the commonly used crib bedding tripled in the last seven years of data gathered, according to the study's authors.

Between 1985 and 2012, bumpers were possibly involved in 77 deaths. Of the deaths that were due to suffocation, 67% were caused by the bumper alone and 33% happened when a baby got wedged between the bumper and another object.

There are currently no federal regulations for crib bumpers. There are industry standards that companies follow, which were revised in 2012 to improve crib bumper safety.
