Giant Panda Lun Lun gives birth to twins!

ATLANTA, Ga. -- It's official -- Zoo Atlanta's Giant Panda Lun Lun has given birth to twins!

Officials announced the two new additions -- Lun Lun's second pair of twins -- Saturday morning.  Panda baby 1 arrived at 7:20 this morning, and panda baby 2 arrived shortly after around 8:07 a.m. They are the sixth and seventh giant pandas born at the zoo.

The Zoo initially discovered Lun Lun's pregnancy on Aug. 16, and an additional ultrasound uncovered a second fetus on Aug. 22.

Now that the new cubs have been welcomed to the world, zoo officials say they're focusing on making sure the babies, who haven't yet been named, stay healthy and happy.

"We're thrilled and relieved that the second of Lun Lun's twins has arrived," the Vice President of Animal Divisions Hayley Murphy said in a statement. "Our focus now will be the care and monitoring of the cubs and Lun Lun to ensure that both cubs have the best opportunity to succeed."

Nineteen-year-old Lun Lun is the mother of the only pair of giant panda twins in the U.S., 3-year-olds Mei Lun and Mei Huan. She was artificially inseminated at the end of March.

Zoo Atlanta advises when wild panda mothers give birth to twins, they typically only care for one cub, but advances in animal care and veterinary care in zoos have allowed for successful rearing of twin cubs.

Giant Panda enthusiasts will officially be introduced to the new additions sometime in December 2016 or January 2017, but until then, they can continue to monitor mom and new cubs by watching the live Panda Cam!
