Woman gets bill from hospital she never visited

Remember what it was like with your first child? It was two parts wonderment and one part exhaustion.

"The first three months have been very tough, not enough sleep. All I got to do is feeding, changing, burping, but it's getting easier," said Michelle Ma.

Michelle Ma has got it all going on with her daughter Kiki, and now Michelle's got two other babies to take care of and they're pretty awful: Two medical bills for more than $1,500 from Evergreen Hospital.

"I haven't been there, I didn't do anything there, why did they send a bill?" she wondered.

Michelle says she's only been to Evergreen Hospital once and that was for a car seat check for Kiki.

So the new mom called the hospital when she first got the bills.

"She checks through the Social Security number and she says I wasn't even in their system. She said this must have been sent to the wrong address, we'll get it corrected," said Michelle.

But it wasn't.

Next, the mailman delivered two collection notices - one for $1500, the other for $66. By this time, this momma wasn't happy.

"Holding the cellphone in one hand and holding the baby in one hand, and the baby didn't like that, and she started crying, and I was on the phone sweating. It was a very bad experience," she said.

The people at Evergreen Hospital said they'd investigate the charges again, but after by this time Michelle had enough, so she called me.

We asked for an explanation from Evergreen, but they couldn't give us one. But they were willing to take care of those bills.

Jesse Jones: "You don't owe a cent. You are not going to get any more bills and the whole thing is over."

Michelle Ma: "I can't believe it. It's like magic."

If you get a bill that you know you don't owe, dispute it in writing via certified mail. Also tell the collection agency to stop contacting you and don't throw away any correspondence.

I don't think of it as sheer laziness on the part of the hospital. I used to work in the hospital billing dept and the phones are ringing off the hook all of the time. You get in trouble if you don't answer it right away, even if you are not done with the last call. I had to deal with this personally a few years ago as well but from a different business. I highly suggest that you keep notes as to what day, time as well as who you talked to.. just in case you have to deal with it again.. Also.. ask for them to send you a letter stating that this bill is not yours just in case they forget to notify the credit bureaus.. that way you have your back up. Can't cover your bases to much anymore. Anyone that has children knows that it never fails, the child is quiet until your get on the phone or get your dinner served..

Ah, something similar happened to us in 1979. In Sept.1978, we had a son born at our local hospital. We got the bill/paid it off. Then in early 1979 we received another bill from this same hospital for a child supposedly born to us in January of 1979! Knowing the billing was a mistake, I phoned the hospital only to be told they were "demanding" the money from me and would turn me over to "collection" if I didn't pay for this second baby! After quite a few frustrating minutes, I finally stated "...according to my doctor it takes nine months to have a baby. So how could I have a baby in September and then another fully gestated baby in January?!" After being placed on "hold" for another little while, the "expert" in the business office returned, without any apology, and told me they would "check into it"...DUH! I never received any other notice from them; however I wrote to the hospital "demanding" a letter FROM THEM documenting THEIR mistake for MY file.(We are now Grandparents;))

Maybe she should have waited to call when her baby was napping.

Sheer laziness on the part of the hospital employees. Anymore, people don't care about the job they do, just the paycheck they get. Things like this shouldn't take Jesse to fix it, but I'm glad he did.
