SEATTLE - You may have been called by someone soliciting for donations for families of the four Lakewood police officers who were killed in a coffee shop Sunday.

But how do you know if they are legit?

Kristin Alexander of the Washington State Attorney General's Office says some of these solicitors are really professional fundraisers. They may pull at your heartstrings, but what they really are after is your pocketbook.

"This is such a difficult time already. I would hate to have somebody victimized even further by finding out that the money they were giving, thinking were doing good, actually went to another cause," said Alexander.

If you get called at home, don't give money right way. Take their information down and check them out online through the Secretary of State's Office and the Better Business Bureau.

Officially, if you would like to give to the officers' families, there is a fund set up through the Lakewood Police Guild. You can donate by clicking here.
