Five members of Washington state's congressional delegation on Friday wrote to the U.S. Coast Guard seeking clarity on the service's role in responding to debris arriving in Pacific waters from the 2011 Japan tsunami.

Rep. Jim McDermott (D) was joined by Reps. Norm Dicks (D), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R), Adam Smith (D) and Dave Reichert (R) in urging the Coast Guard to communicate a consistent policy for how it will respond to debris and coordinate with other federal and local agencies. Lawmakers from other West Coast states also joined in signing the letter.
