Thursday marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. To celebrate you'll find many events taking place around the region.

King County will host the seventh annual Earth Day Expo at Westlake Park in Seattle.

The University of Washington will have a Sustainability Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with activities, demonstrations and giveaways. There will also be Earth Day activities at the UW Tower, UW Bothell and UW Tacoma.

The Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle celebrates Earth Day with an open house event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Northwest Hospital & Medical Center in Seattle will have a special tree planting ceremony on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 1 p.m.

At Kent's Earthworks, people can check out art, music, and dance - starting at 7 p.m.

In Tacoma, grab the family and check out the Earth Day Garden Fair, starting at 4 p.m. at Bryant Montessori School.

Has been around for a long time? I guess that depends on your idea of long. Earth day started in 1970, right here in The US, and is now celebrated in multiple countries throughout the world. Earth Day is really just a day to act upon all the ideas we hear all year long about bettering our planet. I know many us don't really think about the future, but think about the present! What could happen in our lifetime if we do not take charge of our environment? Simply planting a tree (which costs little money if any) or recycling (which can really pay you cash) are good and easy places to start.

I like the show "Life after people"... basically, the earth, after people are gone and WITHOUT our help erases human interference in 10,000 years...
