Tar sands oil heading this way

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- As environmental groups applauded the Obama Administration's decision to put the tar sands XL pipeline project on hold, some groups in the Northwest started getting an uneasy feeling.

"Not a lot of people know it but there is a tar sands pipeline to Vancouver," said Matt Krogh, North Sound Baykeeper at RE-Sources for Sustainable Communities in Bellingham.

Krogh said the pipeline has steadily increased its flow over the last three years and with the possible death of the XL pipeline deal, he said plans were announced to triple the line's capacity. He and others are worried that will lead to a dramatic increase in the busy oil tanker traffic already flowing out of Vancouver.

We could find no official requests to increase oil exports, but with Chinese and Canadian leaders working out details this week to export Canadian oil to China, the deal seems to be well in motion.

Long time fishermen like Walter Young worry the increased tanker traffic through the Haro and Rosario Straits will put the sensitive waters near Puget Sound in peril.

"Guaranteed disaster," said Young.

Tar sands oil is pretty dirty oil and the pumping of it through a pipeline is a problematic thing... it is unfortunate that Canada just doesn't take the time to invest in refineries near the source, and then use a pipeline to move finished product instead (or, even, use rail to move it). Short sighted corporate thinking that keeps supplies tight and prices high as existing refineries are at or near capacity, with plenty of crude already available but backed up in the supply chain.

Again spacedover, look at real numbers of how many jobs would be created by this stupid pipeline and stop reading the cooked over industry hype about job numbers. Also, as someone else pointed out, this is Canadian oil, all going into some huge pool not benefiting the U.S. directly anyway. How about we run this pipeline through your backyard?

We are losing a lot of jobs, industry and huge economic advantage with this oil and we should all thank Obama for making it all possible. He is so wonderful for the USA missing out on this huge supply of oil. I guess those environmental concerns will be answer with his more subsidies for the solar panel companies if we can pump enough money at them to keep them from bankruptcy.

Another thing pipeline proponents don't understand (and probably wouldn't care about ) is that they planned to build that pipeline using substandard Chinese steel. Couple that with the effect of running tar sludge like sandpaper through it and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the price of maintaining it would be astronomical. Not to mention flaws in the software that control the robot that inspects the interior of the pipe and running it across the largest aquifer in the U.S. is sheer insanity. Let the Canucks deal with their crappy oil. The jobs produced by the pipeline are far fewer than hyped by the oil company controlled media.

See, that is the problem. People are confused about the pipeline. First, it had nothing to do with using our own oil. It is Canadian oil being sent to the gulf so it can be shipped out. And it is junk oil. It would create a few jobs to put the line in, but then the jobs will be gone. As for safety of underground pipes, ask the folks in Billings. It would go through a very important undeground water source in Nebraska that could be destroyed by the digging alone, let alone a leak in that area. I'm sure that some of our oil would get in the pipe, but the refineries are at full capacity already, so there is nowhere for the oil to go other than overseas. It will not benefit us. Now, if we build a new refinery in North Dakota at the source, that would benefit us longterm.

And you wonder why Americans aren't getting jobs. We prevent jobs from opening up in America. Especially where oil is concerned. We are so focused on getting oil from forign markets instead of tapping the vast amount of oil we have here in our own borders. Meanwhile our neighbors to the north and south take advantage of this and tap into the same oil deposits and suck them dry. Then sell the oil to us for a higher cost then it would have been if we took it ourselves. Thanks to the President and the left wingers in Congress. Put the pipeline in and create some good paying jobs for a change. People need living wages not minimum wage jobs.

This is typical of environmentalist. They protest a pipeline that is very safe and uses less fuel to move the stuff. Now it will be shipped onto boats that are not as safe and burn the dirtiest fuel to move the stuff. Build the pipeline because it is safe and environmentally friendly. Sorry but the world uses oil get over it.

Time to invest in an oil cleanup business? No. Thousands of shops navigate the sound every year with no problems. Maybe a few gallons here an there, but nothing big.
