SEATTLE - As each tiny sliver of Hope Blueberry's hair falls to the floor, she feels a little better about not being able to go fight the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Blueberry is getting her hair cut at Seattle's Studio 904 which has been sweeping up all the leftover hair each night for several years and sending it off to a California company that turns into oil absorbing pads and boom.
"Oh, I think it's wonderful, I was trying to think of a way to get down there and help out, but every little part makes a difference," said Blueberry.
The rapidly expanding spill in the Gulf is pumping efforts at Studio 904 and salons, barber shops, and pet grooming businesses all across the country. Every bit of hair they can collect they will send off to the Matter of Trust organization in San Francisco. That company then compresses it into mats and tubes that experts say are very effective at absorbing oil.
Studio 904 will accept human and pet hair from any organization of people who want to bring it in. They are located at 401 1st Ave. So. in Seattle's Pioneer Square.
