A property owner who clear cut the shoreline on the west side of San Juan Island has been fined $79,000 and ordered to restore the damage.
The fines are $24,000 for state water quality and $55,000 for shoreline violations. Because the company, Orca Dreams, LLC, has cooperated with the investigation, DEO set the fines below the maximum allowed.
According to the Washington Department of Ecology, last fall Orca Dreams, removed at least 80 trees from 1.25 acres during the fall of 2013. DOE says the vegetation was cleared to bare soil, creating a high potential for erosion directly above the bay.
San Juan County initially fined Orcas Dreams and its contractor $1,000 each for violating county code after inspecting the site.
Orca Dreams must submit a restoration plan to DOE by August 31 and replant the property by Oct. 31.
The DOE will monitor the property for the next decade.
