SEATTLE -- Thousands of years ago people migrated from Asia to America across the Bering Strait. It was a land bridge then. Today a group planning to retrace that path took an icy plunge in Puget Sound to practice.
Members of the "Meeting of the Sun" organization converged on a West Seattle beach for an international celebration marking one thing all nations have in common -- the human body.
The group intends to promote the limitless potential of the body by subjecting 30 of its members to a 53-mile relay swim across the Bering Strait.
Thursday they took on Puget Sound. The Sound is relatively balmy compared to the subfreezing temperatures in the Bering Sea, but the group wants to make the point that we have no idea what our bodies can do.
They will allow doctors and scientists to observe and investigate the effects of the cold water on their bodies during that swim.
The event, which begins in July in Russia, features top open water swimmers from Russia, China, Great Britain, the U.S. and other countries.
