Near OLYMPIA, Wash. - When dikes were removed to recreate the natural river delta in the Nisqually National Wildlife Reserve, bird watchers and hikers lost a very popular trail.

The trail took them along the top of a dike, deep into the refuge, for one of the best bird watching opportunities in the Northwest.

But now a new one mile long, $2.7 million boardwalk is about to provide access to tide lands that have been gone from the delta for a hundred years.

Refuge managers say bird watchers are already reporting sightings of species they've never seen before at this site and the boardwalk isn't even open yet.

Construction of the elevated path has not been easy.

Contractors say they could not use the motorized equipment they would normally have on a job like this. They have to protect the land and wildlife from heavy machinery, so much of the work had to be done by hand - by a large crew with strong backs.

The 762 acre refuge is expected to draw millions of birds and thousands of visitors by the time the boardwalk opens; in time for the winter's best birdwatching opportunities.

What a wonderful thing. If you haven't made it to this refuge park you should really plan on making a stop. It is so peaceful and lots of easy walking paths.

Agreed, cmeeverett. What they should do is have someone posted where you access the boardwalk and inform those approaching with kids of the rules to use the boardwalk. I see too many times where parents allow their kids to run uncontrolled in areas like this, it's really disappointing to see. When my kids were young, they were taught to respect these environments. There are places to let the kids run and hopefully the parents will realize this.

Not a waste of money. just look at these guys building it ---sounds like they learned a thing or two. ---HOWEVER, please keep your screaming kids off the boardwalk. This a a nature preserve & unlike humans, birds require peace & quiet to breed.

I agree that it is not a waste of money. In fact it is one of the best uses to our state money there is. Tourisim and Natural resources are this states best assets. There are so many beautiful places to visit here. People spend money when they come. restoring the eviroment makes us all healthier. IF YOU THINK just a little beyond the end of your own nose then you can see that there is much more benifit than waste.

Returning the delta to its original state, and making it possible for people to enjoy the area, is not a waste of money. It is a beautiful and awesome area!
