The mystery about the strange mounds that are hundreds of feet below the surface of the Hood Canal may have been solved.

Scientists took a closer look with a remote control camera and it turns out, they may not be gas seeps or geothermal vents, but instead they may be underwater landslides.

The two mounds, which are each more than 100 feet high and 1,000 feet wide are at the bottom of the sound end of the canal.

Researchers used submersible vehicle in 2008 to take a closer look, they discovered that the mounds were most likely created by underwater landslides of sediments that built up at the mouths to two small rivers.
