NEAR OLYMPIA -- Pieces of priceless Northwest trees are decking the halls of homes all around the world this time of year -- illegally.

Officer Jason Bodine investigates theft almost every day this time of year. The victims are all around him.

The Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Officer can go almost anywhere in the massive Capitol Forest near Olympia and find one.

Trees stripped of their boughs from top to bottom, ferns and other plants ripped from the ground, majestic Douglas firs laying on the ground.

"This is a huge business," explained Bodine, "Thousands and thousands of pounds of these boughs  end up on docks every day and are shipped all over the world."

The boughs are part of a high demand holiday bounty in Northwest forests. The holiday decoration industry demands huge amounts for wreaths, table settings, and other festive products. They fill homes with fresh smells and holiday spirit but they often leave trees in our public forests resembling lifeless poles that will slowly die.

Thieves also cut down massive trees filled with thousands of dollars of valuable timber and chop them up for a few hundred dollars in firewood.

It's the waste that bothers Bodine the most. He's made several arrests so far this season and said making more will bring some cheer to his holiday season.

Thanks to King 5 for bringing up this topic and thank the officer for being vigilant and not just brushing (ha a semi pun) this off or looking the other way. I have also read that year round there are often illegal immigrants from Latin America who cut salal in our forests and sell it to florist shops. I would like to see Reuven Carlyle or Mary Lou Dickerson or Jeanne Kohl-Welles take action about this in the upcoming legislative season. If you agree, write to your state legislator! quartz 2...I respectfully disagree with your comment about dead trees. If the rule is to preserve the forest for all of us then there is no excuse for anyone to cut down dead trees. I find it far fetched and wishful to assume that the only people cutting down dead trees are out of work people with wood stoves who have no other source of fuel

It looks like there are two parts to this story. The first photo and most of the others showed examples of illegal wood cutting. In photo #1 the tree was long dead before it was cut. With all the people out of work I have little problem with someone cutting down a dead tree for fire wood. The cutting of live trees is a problem. First they have great value to the owner. Second the wood is wet and doesn't burn well, for a year. Make wood cutting permits more accessible to the public. The second part of the story was about illegal gathering of bows. Cutting down trees for their foliage, illegal cutting of brush and other products that are sold to dealers who sell it on the wholesale market. I say go after the buyers. Make them only buy from pickers who have legal permits to do so. If a picker comes in with more than he can pick in a day find out why. All brush picking enforcement should be paid for by the floral wholesalers, not the general public.

@comiccon2010, I bet if this were your land you would be upset. Oh, thats right it is your land and mine and the rest of the taxpayers. Such apathy is why this country is in the condition it is.

I heard some chainsaws this past summer out where I was then I heard gunshots, then no more chainsaws. Im guessing some folks were poaching trees on private land. I was at a friends ranch out sitting by the fire, and it was after midnight. I doubt there will be any more poaching on that land!!

I would like to get the phone number for Officer Bodine. I am in Capitol Forest all the time on the trails, hiking, hunting etc. Every Year around this time I see (im not being racist) vans full of Mexicans, and some people that are Oriental out taking all different types of under brush, ferns, boughs you name it. But any more I cant trust people, so id rather not get into a scuffle in the woods when they could be carrying a pistol. I am an Archery Hunter so it would not be a fair fight. So if any of you viewers have some numbers to give I can and will report people. Thanks for the help!

This isn't just happening on public land. I recently had 5 OLD growth cedars stripped clear to the top. When the police arrived they said the cedar branches were worth thousnds of dollars. I had actually seen the men doing it using machetes NOT chain saws and they did't even run when I said I was calling the Police. BUT at the mention of INS the took off even leaving there equipment. My property is now ruined and the trees will just die as the were stripped clear to the top and they left a mess of soda cans to top the whole thing off. Make sure when you buy tree products that the folks you buy from can identify where there product actually comes from. Or buy at a tree farm and cut yourself. Boycott the stands on the corner. King 5 If you are interested I can let you take pictures ets
