Chinese site to steer users to legit music source

Posted on November 2, 2009 at 1:02 PM

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A free and legal song download service says it now will be getting traffic from China's largest search engine, which is trying to reduce online music piracy.

The free service, Qtrax, has licensing deals with all the major recording companies and their publishing units. Its service is supported by advertising.

Under the deal announced Monday, users of the entertainment portal in the Chinese search engine, Baidu.com, will get directed to Qtrax whenever they search for a song or artist in Qtrax's catalog. Qtrax says the agreement will benefit artists and copyright holders by steering people away from unauthorized sources for free music.
