WASHINGTON (AP) — Lady Bird Johnson said walking through the White House was like walking "through history." Hillary Clinton called the home "a repository of America's storied past." Michelle Obama has called it "awe inspiring."
The authors of a new book have another name for the house at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.: "the American house next door."
The two authors of the new book "Dream House" — one of them a great-great grandson of President Ulysses S. Grant — say that over the past 200 years, the president's house has morphed from a country house to a suburban home to a museum. They say that in the process, presidents' changes have reflected Americans' ideas about what a home should be.
The authors will be in Washington on Sunday to talk about their book.
