OLYMPIA, Wash. - It has become second nature: see hand sanitizer, pump hand sanitizer onto your hands.

Health officials have promoted the use of hand sanitizers to help fight outbreaks of diseases and germs, but experts say it doesn't work on everything. Now, an Olympia fourth grader says she can prove it doesn't work on E.coli.

Nine-year-old Celia Vernon won her class science fair at Roosevelt Elementary with an experiment involving a live sample of E.coli. Under the guidance of her father, a biologist with a background in microbiology, Vernon tested several solutions on E.coli, including Purell brand hand sanitizer.

In a side-by-side comparison with common bleach, the E.coli on the Purell side survived. On the bleach side, it died.

The Vernons say they have no bone to pick with Purell, but were surprised to learn it doesn't kill one of the main dangers associated with exposures from using bathrooms.

A spokesperson for the makers of Purell told KING 5 News that it stands by its claims to kill 99 percent of germs and suggested we contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A CDC spokesperson says they have not studied hand sanitizers specifically on E.coli and recommend hand sanitizers only when soap and water are not available.

E.coli isn't a virus it's a bacteria. Most things don't work on viruses because of the protein coat they are incased in. Soap and hot water work the best but yeah if they aren't available then use the sanitizer.

So what's this supposed to mean? That we're supposed to put our hand sanitizers away because they don't work on one strain of virus? Hey, better something than nothing I say. If I can avoid a cold, nasty flu, or even a parasite by using my handsanitizer before eating while out in public, then it's still pretty good stuff to carry around with me.

I was in another state recently, which had an outbreak of some virus, and they warned us that alcohol and hand sanitizers wouldn't kill the virus, so we had to wipe everything down with Clorox wipes in order to prevent infection.

I'm always amused when every commercial for a germ killing, anti-bacterial produce will end their commercial by stating that it is guaranteed to kill 99.9% of all bacteria. That leaves the door open when someone who zealously used Purell or a similar product comes down with something like E-coli. The spokesperson for Purell said that they stand by their claim that it kills 99% of the germs it comes in contact with. Purell will probably soon be telling us that E-coli is one of the 1% of the germs and diseases that it won't kill. I wonder how many germs or diseases will fit into that 1% figure. Yes, I know not to believe any commercials. I'm just having fun with this.

Perhaps it killed E coli under different test conditions. Perhaps the 4th graders found a Purell-resistant strain of E Coli, which really could be news. Hard to tell what's going on with no information given on methods, a little on results . I guess what makes this news is that 4th graders were involved. Here's another news-worthy story: "4th grader bites dog; dog infected with E. Coli!"
