When the 15 finalists for the annual Essentially Ellington competition at Lincoln Center in New York were announced, jazz lovers were pleased but not surprised to see two familiar names from Seattle: Roosevelt and Garfield high schools.

But for the first time in the competition's history, Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, also made the finals.

Matthew Wenman, the band director at Mount Si, along with Scott Brown from Roosevelt High School visited KING 5 to talk about how they are preparing for the national competition that will take place May 8-10.

It will be streamed live online.
