Woodland Park Zoo's twin sloth bear cubs ventured outside for the first time Friday, March 28th.

The 3.5-month-old cubs rode their mother Tasha's back into the outdoor exhibit. Nine-year-old Tasha gave birth to the cubs in December.

Zoo veterinarians don't know the sex of the cubs. Mother Tasha hasn't allowed people near the cubs since giving birth.

"Through observational evaluations, we could see the cubs were growing and doing well," said Pat Owen, a collection manager at Woodland Park Zoo. "Tasha's motherly instincts kicked in right away and we remained confident she was providing excellent maternal care."

The family is set to debut to the public on May 4. The trip outside on Friday was the first of a series of outdoor introductions leading up to that date.

The father of the cubs, Randy, died of cancer in January at 16 years of age.

The bear cubs are the first born at Woodland Park Zoo since 2004.
