Thanks to a nationwide Groupon fundraiser, K-9s with the Edmonds Police Department will receive ballistic vests.

The campaign raised more than $335,000 to purchase the protective vests, and K-9 Hobbs will be the first to sport one.

"[It is a] very impressive campaign for a great cause," said Edmonds Officer Jason Ribonson, K-9 Hobbs' partner.

Groupon selected The "Occasions" campaign to support Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc., a Massachusetts non-profit organization that provides bullet and stab-proof vests for police dogs. The fundraiser ran from February 15 to March 5, with a suggested donation of $10. Each vest costs $950 and has a five-year warranty.

In 2013, Vested Interest raised $155,000 in one week, which provided vests for 163 police K-9s in 30 states. There are an estimated 30,000 police dogs in the United States.

Vested Interest is still accepting donations through their website: www.vik9s.org
