The Pacific Northwest looked vastly different in the mid-1800s than it does now. In 1859 there were only 5,000 people living in the area that were non-native.

In his latest book, Widow Walk, Seattle physician and author Gerard LaSalle recounts the clash between Natives and white settlers on Whidbey Island.

He talked about the book with KING5's Mark Wright.
