A woman was sexually assaulted Tuesday by a man who broke into her apartment, according to Redmond Police.

The woman was studying when the suspect entered her apartment through an unlocked sliding door just before 2 a.m., officers said. The man put a knife to her throat and sexually assaulted her.

Officers arrived at the apartment on the 8500 block of 148th Avenue Northeast to investigate, but the suspect got away.

They believe he fled north through a parking lot, where he got into a car.

The woman said she did not recognize the suspect.

The suspect is described as:

--white or light skinned Latino male

     --medium build

     --strong accent, possibly Spanish

--wearing a dark baseball hat, white t-shirt, dark sweatshirt/jacket
