TUMWATER, Wash. -- Police said they arrested a state worker after he allegedly tried to hire someone to kill his estranged wife. The 44-year-old man is in the Thurston County Jail for investigation of criminal solicitation to commit murder.

Detective Jen Kolb said the man contacted someone who also happened to be a confidential source for Tumwater police.

"He had wanted my source to kill his wife or find somebody for him to kill his wife, and said he was offering money to do it," said Det. Kolb. "It was very clear that he was serious about this. We didn’t want him continuing to try and solicit somebody whether it be my source or another avenue to follow through on a crime."

Det. Kolb said she first received the information on May 22. She worked to gather evidence, like recordings of the man talking with the confidential source. Tuesday before 1:00 p.m., the man was arrested near the roundabout on Harrison Avenue NW in Tumwater.

Police informed the man's estranged wife in late May about the allegations. She received a visit from police on Tuesday after the arrest was made.

"My heart just sank to my stomach. I felt some relief, but I am still torn," she said. "I haven’t slept. I am not eating. I am nauseous all the time at just the thought of it."

The estranged wife did not want her identity known because she is still afraid.

"I feel betrayed. I did everything for him. I loved him with all my heart," she said.

The couple was together for more than ten years, and they were married for almost five years, according to the estranged wife. At the beginning of 2013, serious talks about divorce began. Det. Kolb said the suspect was "having issues in his marriage, divorce,  and there was some contention when it came to money."

He is due in court Wednesday to face allegations that he tried to hire someone to commit murder.
