A Lake Tapps man, formerly known as a millionaire and commercial pilot for UPS, pleaded guilty Tuesday to child molestation charges for the second time, ending five years of courtroom drama.
Weldon Marc Gilbert, 52, pleaded guilty in 2009 to sex crimes but withdrew that plea when he was told the sentence could be as long as life in prison. He also pleaded guilty in federal court to producing child pornography and received a 25-year sentence.
“Its time for me to end this,” Gilbert said in court. “I feel horrible because of my actions already and for what (the victims) have gone through, and I want to end this.”
But Gilbert’s courtroom apology was greeted with harsh words from Superior Court Judge Katherine M. Stolz.
“You’ve played games with us from the get-go,” she told him. “The bottom line is you are a pedophile. You are sexually attracted to children and you are an extreme deviant.”
Stolz ordered Gilbert to serve 116 months in prison in addition to the current 25 year federal sentence. Stolz does not give Gilbert credit for the three years he has been sitting in the Pierce County Jail awaiting trial.
Investigators say Gilbert paddled and sexually abused boys at his Lake Tapps home over several years. He videotaped many of the incidents. Investigators reviewed more than 400 hours of video on 123 tapes seized from Gilbert's home.
Prosecutors alleged Gilbert attracted young boys with rides in his airplane, travel, alcohol and flying lessons.
Gilbert stirred up controversy last year when he decided to act as his own defense attorney granting him access to hours of his homemade child pornography secured as evidence in his case.
