Pierce County prosecutors have charged a man with a 2002 homicide and two unrelated rapes that happened the same year.
The News Tribune reports Miguel Angel Urbano-Vazquez, 35, is charged with aggravated murder in the death of Sharon Y. Van Gilder. She was found strangled along a road in Spanaway on March 21, 2002.
Urbano-Vazquez is also charged in the June 24, 2002 case of a woman who said she was raped by a man she accepted a ride from in Tacoma. She said the man took her to a garage, hit her with a wrench and sexually assaulted her. Police say it’s the same garage where another woman claimed she was raped on April 18, 2002.
Urbano-Vasquez was reportedly questioned about the first rape in 2003. DNA evidence from all three crimes was submitted by the cold case squad. All three came back the same.
