PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man accused of selling Portland-area cemetery plots that weren't really for sale and pocketing the money has been indicted on a charge of aggravated theft.
Washington County, Ore., sheriff's Sgt. Vance Stimler says 53-year-old Michael Robert Swartz is accused of selling people plots that had already been sold. At the time, in 2009, Swartz worked as a sales director at the Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary and Memorial Park.
Stimler wouldn't say how much Swartz is accused of stealing, only that it was a "substantial amount." The man's employment with the company reportedly ended in April 2011.
Swartz has been living in Kent, Wash. He was arrested Tuesday and released after posting bail.
The Oregonian says Swartz was arraigned Wednesday. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 13.
Finley-Sunset Hills has provided the victims with plots in alternate locations.
