SEATTLE -- Danny Vega, the Seattle salon owner who was brutally attacked by a group of teenagers almost two weeks ago, died Sunday afternoon after 12 days on life support.

"It's very painful for me to see him in that kind of situation," said Eli Ferrer, who knew Vega for decades. "It's really so hard to lose a friend."

Ferrer was one of about 30 people who gathered to pray for Vega Sunday night at his home, which also served as his salon most his life.

On Nov. 15, Vega, a prominent figure in the city's Filipino American community, was taking an evening walk nearby in Seattle's Rainier Valley neighborhood when three teens attacked him from behind, said police.

They beat Vega unconscious and took his cell phone and keys. Vega was hospitalized with severe injuries to his kidneys, liver and brain. He fell into a coma and was later put on life-support.

James Saarenas, who along with some international students lived in Vega's house, said they were not just praying for peace, but for justice.

"The prayers and vigil will continue while those three people have not been caught,"  Saarenas said. "We just want to make sure that this will not happen to anybody else."

Family,  friends and neighbors also held a vigil for Vega Saturday night at Othello and Martin Luther King Way in the Rainier Valley.

Although police were not investigating the attack as a hate crime, his family believes Vega was targeted. He was openly gay and not afraid to show it.

I am so saddened by this news. I last saw Danny at the International Fashion Tour just last month. I was surprised that he still remembered me. I understand that hate crimes usually happen when the suspects are white. But if you think about it, technically we are also considering who has more power over the other. Danny was an openly gay man... don't you think it would still be a hate crime because (assuming that the 3 teens were heterosexual), it would be a crime on silencing the sexuality of others? We may not know a whole lot of details yet and things are still to be determined but these are just my thoughts and opinions. Danny, all I know is that you were a wonderful man and such a cheery presence to have around within the Filipino Community. We hope that justice will be served. My thoughts are with you and your family during these difficult times. Does anyone know if we can still make a donation to his fund at Wells Fargo?

gay, straight, black or white it does not matter. Murder is murder. I'm so sorry for the loss the family is experiencing and hope justice is served. RIP Mr. Vega

sounds like a repeat of tuba man's murder. three teens beating a man to death for kicks. if the teens are black, they'll get 18 months. if they are white it'll be a hate crime and they'll get 18 years.

What is with the violence with young people these days? Maybe too many violent video games and other violent images? Couple that with poor or no parenting and you have a recipe for disaster. Time for parents to step up and raise responsible young adults. Actually....way past time. RIP Mr. Vega. Bless all those who love you.

To the losers who killed this man: You can run, but you can't hide. Even if you're not caught in this lifetime, you will be dealt with appropriately by the almighty in the end. You are already condemned to hell.

How often do teens in particular and just people in general treat others every day? I confronted a group of teens a couple of months ago who thought it was funny to be rude to an average person in the Safeway parking lot. When I called them out on it, the lead punk got in my face and started cussing at me. He towered over me, but I got within an inch from his face and told him that he couldn't treat people like that. When he saw I wasn't backing down but more was handling him like I would my own kid (I'm 41), he started looking around for his buddies and then said he was going to tell a cop that I was harassing him. A cop was nearby so I told him to go ahead. Of course, he wouldn't. When people give them a pass and they don't expect to be held accountable, they will continue to do what they want. I grow weary hearing what people say they'll do to these punks after they commit a crime. How about keeping them accountable for their actions before they hurt someone? That means all of us.

Rob- Euthanizing a dog is usually an act of caring and compassion to release them from suffering. These people so clearly don't deserve that.

1. I pray they find and arrest those 3 teenager monsters. 2. I also pray they don't try them in juvvy court and let them back out in a few months, like the Tuba Man killers. Why do we insist on treating violent juveniles as babies and do not hold them accountable for their adult crimes?

RdGaric? You are SO right. We need the extra curricular activities for the kids before they turn into the little human maggots like the teens who murdered this man. BUT... once they become little maggots, they are a lost cause. They serve no purpose and need to be locked away. I don't think its too far of a stretch to hold their parents accountable as well for letting their little darlings run the streets. I know this isn't popular, but we need a curfew and after a few violations, parents need to face fines and/ or youth community service sentence for the kids. Parents need to parent their kids, instead of creating problems like these teens, for the rest of us to deal with.

This could be a random attack having nothing to do with the victim being a gay. And these types of crime happen almost everyday in America. So let's not try to assume and use this incident for promoting your personal hidden agenda which may include gay bashing when you have NO substantial proof to say otherwise. These 3 kids are KILLERS!!!!! no quetion. By the way, I'm NOT a gay but I believe gays also do have right to live.

I think that it will help, setrting up things for these kids to do. It keeps them from the hands of the gangs at a young age so they grow up with some sense. It is a little too late for these teens, and young adults, but we can at least help the young before it is too late for them. It is very sad about this crime, and just goes to show how hard it can be for people to make an honest dollar anymore without it being taken from them. I hope his family recieves the condolences we send to them, and may his memory live on. RIP.

And just what are the city government, the mayor, the SPD, and the prosecutors office doing about youth violence in Seattle? I attended a community meeting in Rainier Beach earlier this year: in regards to youth violence, the mayor and police chief talked about 1) better lighting in the neighborhood, and 2) more community activities for youth. GREAT. That will surely solve the problem. Somehow, I think the time for extracurricular art classes is over, and the time for arrest, prosecution as adults, and prison sentences are in order. Maybe time fed-up citizens to let the city know this.

Close to my Parents & Grandparents. You were so kind, caring, passionate & sooo full of life. I will not forget last time I saw you during your afternoon run. With a wide smile on your face. My heart pains that you are gone but just no that your legacy lives on. Thank you for the memories you gave me and others in the community. I am happy that you are in peace now. You are now safe in God's hands. No more pain, sadness or suffering. My condolensces goes out to your family and friends during their speedfast recovery and mourning. Justice will be served! I'm deeply saddened to hear about Danny Vega. Danny was a pillar of the Filipino Community as well as the Rainier Valley Community. I remember getting a haircut from him 25 years ago when I was in high school. My condolences to his family and friends. My words for his attackers: Was a cellular phone really worth someone's life? I hope you are caught and justice served swiftly.

What a senseless beating!!! What on earth gets into anyone's head that it is ok to beat someone else to death? I just don't get the mentality of the culture today. All people seem to understand now days is violence being the answer for everything but each one of us are only given ONE LIFE and ONE CHANCE at life? And how is it that some think it is ok to take someone elses life away from them???? I always say..."YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIKE ME OR WHAT I SAY OR DO, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO ABUSE ME. " This violent culture needs to change. Everyone has as much right to be IN THIS WORLD as you victimizers do. You need to respect that not everyone is going to be to your liking BUT they still have a RIGHT to BE. Live and let live. We need better fare in movies and video games that influence teens who are impressionable. All I see on the previews these days is nothing BUT violence. Guns, people and vehicles flying through the air and bursts of flames. UGH!!!!

He joins Tubaman and other victims of unprovoked, over-the-top violence in a loss to friends and family that reflects so poorly on modern urban life. But now it is murder so perhaps law enforcement and the community at large can effect a measure of justice. That said, without witnesses it may depend upon a pang of conscience on the part of one of the perpetrators, with little to suggest that has occurred or will.
