TUMWATER, Wash . -- The Thurston County Sheriff's Office reports there was some sort of dispute between a 13-year-old suspect and his father leading up to Sunday's fatal shooting.
Jimmie Asher Jr., 39, was shot and killed while he slept in his Olympia home. Detectives said Asher's son shot him with a .17 caliber rifle.
Forwarding a first degree murder recommendation to the Thurston County Prosecutor, the sheriff's office wrote, "prior to the shooting, there was some discord between father and son."
In addition, after the shooting, detectives said, "the younger Asher took steps to conceal evidence."
The 13-year-old boy was arrested and booked into juvenile detention. His family maintains the shooting was an accident.
