SEATTLE -- "We picked the wrong bank," said Jeff Fletcher with a half-grin. "We should have gone to Chase. That's what I was thinking."

Fletcher is the Skyway resident who pulled up to an ATM Saturday night, witnessed a a man shoot another, then made a citizen's arrest.

Handcuffs and all.

"They're my dad's handcuffs from when he was a Seattle police officer," Fletcher said, noting it was rare for him to wear the holster containing those cuffs.

According to King County Sheriff's investigators, a fight broke out between two men around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, possibly over a drug deal, in the U.S. Bank parking lot in the Skyway neighborhood.

Both men drew guns, said investigators, and one man was shot and injured.

Fletcher said he and his friend watched the fight escalate into gunfire.

While his friend hid in the car, Fletcher, a former security guard, hid near the ATM.  He said he noticed the man running towards them, so he pulled out his own legally concealed firearm.

"I told him to drop his weapon, he dropped his weapon," said Fletcher. "I told him to get on the ground, he got on the ground."

Fletcher said minutes later he remembered he was carrying his father's old handcuffs, and used them to detain the shooting suspect.

"When we got here, the shooter was searched, in handcuffs and sitting down on the curb," said Sergeant John Urquhart that night.

Fletcher said he just reacted to the situation, and doesn't really recommend most others do what he did, though he said "to ex-police or ex-army, or somebody who's got sufficient training and who's willing to take on that kind of risk for their loved ones or their community and has the capacity to do it, absolutely."

The shooting victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening.

This is an awesome story! So true with everyones comments about how peopple are normally critcized for having a concealed weapon, and look what good it did in this situation! I am all for bearing arms, and I am all for anyone who carries a concealead firearm! My grandfather has his permit and always has his gun on him.. one day in Nordstorms a number of years ago (probably 30 or 40 years ago) he had his gun on his hip in a holster, and took off his sport coat without thinking, so the firearm was visible, and they actually got escorted off the premises and was told to never come in the store again. He even had the proof with him that he was allowed to carry it with him and that it was registered to him and everything. Sad that its our right to have firearms, but its still frowned upon! Thank you, Mr. Fletcher for being a true hero!

Every able bodied man should be required to carry a firearm, out in the open, on his hip, where it can be readily seen We would have a lot less crime in our communities if every one could fight back.

Thanks for risking your own safety to catch someone who no doubt needed to be taken down a long time ago, Mr. Fletcher!

BRAVO! A properly trained citizen using a legally concealed firearm is a good thing. And that this man was willing to intervene.......my faith in humanity is starting to revive. What we do not need is any more guns in the hands of drunks, gangsters and rage-a-holics. However, the proper use of a gun in a controlled manner is a right I totally support.

Great job Jeff Fletcher. I wish more people like you out there that would risk so much to make our neighborhood a better place to live.

Good on you! We should applaud this man for his sense of responsiblity and courage to be a citizen in more than name only. His comment on doing this only if you know what you are doing is true, and he knew what to do..

I am gratified that this brave act by a private citizen is getting positive media coverage. The media generally demonizes guns and especially demonizes private citizens who carry concealed. There are thousands of instances every year where private citizens use firearms to protect themselves against attack by those who would harm and even murder them. Most of these acts receive no publicity. It is appropriate that this one did.
