If paying for trips to the doctor gives you high blood pressure, there might be a few ways to cut your bills down. Negotiate.
"The medical field is used to negotiating. They negotiate with insurance companies all of the time," said Angie Hicks, founder of Angie's List.
Angie Hicks found some members have been successful getting a discount by talking to the billing manager before their procedures.
You can first start by finding out what Medicare would pay for the procedure, then use that cost as a starting point for negotiations.
"You can start negotiating on what the amount might be and you might be surprised. We've seen people that have saved 10 to 20 percent," she said.
Paying upfront with cash can also get you a discount.
If you can't pay right away, ask about an interest-free payment plan.
The Washington State Hospital Association says you should ask about charity care or financial assistance and, depending on your income, you could get services paid for or reduced.
Otherwise be upfront with what you can pay and see if they can cut you a break.
"They can potentially pass along saving too if from the expense that they save from not having to go chase that bill," she said.
Before you agree to any procedures, you should find out how much the final cost will be that includes facility charges, specialists and the doctor. You can also shop around and compare different hospitals. Make sure you check with your insurance before making the switch.
