Puget Sound Energy says it’s having a tough time getting customers to take advantage of its offer to replace your old refrigerator with a new, more efficient one for free.

PSE is looking for refrigerators that are over 20 years old so that they can be replaced with newer, more efficient Energy Star qualified models by Frigidaire. PSE says it will deliver the new one and take away the old one to be recycled.

The utility claims the new refrigerators can save customers more than $200 a year in energy costs. The refrigerators are basic white, single door models with the freezer on top.

Your old refrigerator must be 10-to-30-cubic feet in size, be the primary food storage in your kitchen and be plugged into a properly grounded 3-prong outlet. It must also have been manufactured on or before 1992. You can find out when it was manufactured by checking inside the door or on the back for a label with the year it was manufactured.

Even if you don't qualify, PSE says it has rebates for replacing your appliances.

Those who are interested can learn if they qualify by calling 1-877-341-2314, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PSE said it’s offering the free, more energy efficient appliances because it’s cheaper than building new power plants, substations, pipelines and other infrastructure that deliver energy to homes. PSE says it’s also cheaper than buying energy on the open market.

A PSE spokesman said there is no charge to customers who participate.
