SEATTLE – The Internal Revenue Service says it has more than $2.9 million in refund checks for Washington state taxpayers that were returned by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.

The IRS says it is holding 2,652 refund checks. The average refund is $1,099.

The IRS says if a refund check is returned as undeliverable, taxpayers can generally update their addresses with the "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. The tool enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her social security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2008 return.

If you prefer using the phone, call 1-800-829-1954 to get instructions on updating your address.

To avoid future delivery problems and to speed up getting your refund, the IRS says you should use direct deposit. Your refund will go directly into your bank account. You are also encouraged to use e-file instead of mailing in your return.
